The table was set, the candles were lit, and music was playing softly. The food had turned out perfectly. The little romantic dinner he had been planning for weeks was going smoothly. Now Jensen just needed to come home and things would be even better.
Jared just hoped that Jensen would like his other surprise. It had been a surprise for Jared finding out that he was pregnant. They had been trying for so long. Jared was afraid that it would never happen for them. He had only gotten the good news last week and had decided to save it for tonight, Jensen’s birthday.
Even though he knew that Jensen wanted a baby just as much as he did, he was still so incredibly nervous. What if Jensen had changed his mind? They had been trying for so long that maybe Jensen had given up completely and no longer wanted a child in his life.
“It’s the birthday boy,” Jared called out when he heard the front door open.
“I’m pretty sure that turning forty means I don’t qualify as a boy anymore,” came the retort.
Jensen’s face brightened though when he saw the evening that Jared had planned for them. Jensen kissed him hello and then sat down at the table. “You’ve really outdone yourself.”
Jared beamed at the praise. He had slaved away in the kitchen for hours cooking some of Jensen’s favorite foods and he was glad that Jensen had noticed. Jared shrugged. “You don’t turn forty every day.”
They talked a bit about their days, but dinner was a mostly quiet affair. They were comfortable when things were quiet. They didn’t need to fill the silence with mindless chatter.
Jared cleared the table when they had finished dinner and announced that it was time for dessert.
“Is this where you tell me that dessert is going to be served in the bedroom?” Jensen leered at him.
Jared rolled his eyes. “Sorry but we have actual dessert tonight.”
Jensen pouted at him but Jared brought the dessert dishes to the table.
He had been fine all day while he was cooking and throughout dinner but it was now that his stomach rebelled. He managed to drop the plates onto the table before running to the bathroom. As his head was hanging over the toilet he heard Jensen approach him and then felt his hand rubbing soothingly over his back. Jared couldn’t believe how spectacularly he had ruined the evening. He pushed Jensen away when he had finished so he could get up and brush his teeth.
“Are you okay, Jared?” Jensen asked when he had finished.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure? Maybe we should call a doctor.”
Jared rolled his eyes. That was Jensen, always the mother hen.
“Jensen, I’m fine. I promise. In fact, I have some news.”
Jensen waited expectantly though he still looked worried.
“I was going to tell you tonight anyway. This is definitely not how I planned to do it. I’m pregnant. Happy birthday.”
Jensen’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Really?”
Jared nodded. Jensen jumped up and down whooping and hollering and then lifted Jared off of his feet, spinning him around. Jared laughed at Jensen’s exuberance. He should have known better than to be worried.
Jensen set him back down and gave him a giant smacking kiss. “Let’s get you back to the kitchen and feed you. I want a cute, chubby baby.”
“You do realize that I’ll be the one giving birth, right?”
Jensen just beamed at him and dragged him off to the kitchen.
