“The beach? Again?”
“You’re surrounded by beach. You may as well just get used to it.”
“I was doing fine until you decided that it was necessary to drag me to the beach all of the time.”
“Poor little Princess. Forced to live the good life.”
Danny glared at him and Steve rolled his eyes.
“It’s a walk along the beach at night. I’m sorry you don’t have a romantic bone in your body.”
“Oh, I’m plenty romantic. I just don’t include the beach in any of my romantic plans.”
“Would you just take a walk on the beach with me?”
“Fine.”
Danny got up and headed for the door. He was risking the wrath of Danny for what he was about to say, but he just couldn’t help himself.
“You’re taking a walk on the beach. The least you could do is take your shoes off.”
It was a sign of how comfortable he was with Danny that he missed the shoe flying at him until it smacked him square on the chest. He was so stunned that he managed to get smacked by the second shoe as well.
“You happy now, Cupcake?”
Steve chuckled, but was secretly glad that Danny had used that name. It meant that he wasn’t actually mad at Steve. He followed Danny and had to bite back a laugh. Danny was still in a tie, but he was barefoot. Only Danny.
They walked along the water, Steve actually walking in the water, Danny’s hands in his pockets, bumping into each other occasionally. It was a beautiful night. The moon was full and bright and the weather was perfect. It was so cliché, but Steve didn’t care. He would never get tired of nights like this, and he was determined to make Danny appreciate it.
They’d been walking for nearly an hour when Steve finally broke the companionable silence.
“You can’t tell me you’re not enjoying yourself.”
“Well, it’s not terrible.”
“Why can’t you just admit you’re enjoying this? You’ve been walking for nearly an hour and I haven’t heard a peep out of you.”
“Why are you so determined to make me like the beach?”
“Because you live in Hawaii.”
“So what?”
They turned and started heading back towards the house.
“Danny, Grace lives here. Whether you’re ready to accept it or not, Hawaii is your home now. I’m not saying you have to change you, but don’t you think you should at least try to make nice with Hawaii?”
Danny stepped in front of him and stopped.
“Steve, I’m on the beach in the middle of the night. I think Hawaii and I are getting along just fine.”
“So you are enjoying yourself right now then.”
“Yeah, I am.”
“Then why can’t you just say that?”
Danny smirked at him. “And make things easy for you, Cupcake? I don’t think so.”
“You’re a dead man, Danno.”
Danny just laughed, and when he turned around to continue their walk, Steve attacked. He tackled Danny into the water, and when Danny came up sputtering and cursing, Steve just laughed.
When Danny was done coughing up his lungful of water, Steve grabbed his tie and pulled him into a kiss.
“I hate you,” Danny murmured against his lips.
“I know.”
They made out under the moonlight for some time before Danny pulled away and wrapped his arm around Steve’s waist, leading them out of the water. It was only when Steve slung his arm around Danny’s shoulders that it occurred to him that he should have shoved Danny out farther to see if he really could swim. Something to remember for next time.
When they were out of the water, Danny pulled him down for a kiss. He spoke quietly against Steve’s mouth. “Just don’t think I’m having sex on the beach with you.”
“Whatever you say, Princess.”
He wouldn’t try to get Danny to do that tonight. He didn’t have a blanket with him, and there was no way that he was going to have sex on the sand. He would get Danny to agree to it though. One little step at a time, but Steve would get him there.
Danny laced his fingers through Steve’s as they continued on their way back to the house.
“You do realize that after that little stunt you just pulled I’m going to make it even harder for you.”
Steve snorted. “Yeah, I know. I’d be worried if you didn’t. Now come on and let’s get back to the house. We need to get you out of those wet clothes.”
“And what makes you think I’ll let you anywhere near me once the wet clothes are off?”
“Oh don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll manage to find some way to convince you.”
“You know, I’m not so sure about that.”
“That hurts, Danny. That really hurts.”
They kept the banter up all the back to the house, where Danny did in fact let Steve get near him once the wet clothes were taken off.
