He had chosen. He hadn’t even put any thought into it, he had just picked. He hadn’t thought twice about not meeting Rachel at the airport, though he did feel guilty whenever he thought about Grace. He honestly hadn’t even been aware that he had chosen until he saw Steve riding away in the police car.
It had been a month since that fiasco. Danny knew that what had happened hadn’t been his fault, but he still couldn’t help thinking that it was. If he hadn’t turned Steve away then maybe Steve wouldn’t have been as reckless, because there was no way that Steve wouldn’t have been at least a little reckless. Danny was dealing with that guilt though.
He had gotten Steve out of jail, and Kono too, and that night, Steve had come to him. He had gotten down on his knees and wrapped his arms around Danny. To this day Danny didn’t know if he had been asking for forgiveness, grateful that Danny had chosen him, or thanking him. Perhaps it was a combination of the three. Either way, it was the most vulnerable Steve had ever been, and neither of them ever talked about it.
When Steve had gotten up, he had taken Danny’s face in his hands and given Danny the sweetest kiss he had ever known. Danny hadn’t looked back.
Steve was taking his time with Danny though, courting him almost timidly like he was afraid that any minute Danny was going to walk out on him.
Danny kind of had that coming. He had almost left Steve after all.
Things were going too slow for Danny’s tastes though. They hadn’t even had sex yet. Hell, they hadn’t even gotten past the kissing stage, and Danny was getting seriously frustrated. Still, he had been the one to screw up, and he had been the one to hurt Steve, so he let Steve set the pace.
Their work done for the day, Steve and Danny set to head out of headquarters. Steve had an arm thrown around Danny’s shoulders. Chin and Kono had said nothing when Steve and Danny had started touching each other more often. That had made Danny think back on their friendship, and when he had done that, he had realized that Chin and Kono probably already assumed that he and Steve had been romantically involved.
Danny was calling out a goodbye to Chin and Kono, and when he turned back around, he was face to face with Rachel. Thankfully, she had Grace in tow.
“Gracie!”
“Danno!” Grace ran up to him and he picked her up, squeezing her tight. He felt like he hadn’t seen her in years, and maybe he would have gone to visit her if Rachel had actually taken any of his phone calls.
He knew Rachel had seen Steve’s arm around his shoulders and apparently Grace had too because when he put her down, she looked up at Steve. “I guess I shouldn’t call you Uncle Steve anymore.”
“No. Probably not.”
“Will I be calling you Step Steve soon?”
Steve knelt down in front of Grace. “I think Danny and I are going to need a little more time than that. Are you okay with this?”
Grace nodded and Steve pulled her in for a hug. Danny looked back up at Rachel. “So, what brings you back to Hawaii?”
“Stan and I are going to give it another shot.”
“And the baby?”
“I had a paternity test done. It turns out the baby is Stan’s.”
Danny sighed in relief and thought about how he had almost been taken in by that. Then he thought of how openly and honestly Steve loves him. How could he have been so stupid?
“Danny, I just wanted to stop by and tell you that you could have Grace every other weekend again.”
“I want her every weekend.”
Rachel huffed out a laugh. “Don’t be absurd.”
“No. You took her away and wouldn’t answer my calls. I haven’t seen her for a month.”
“In case you’ve forgotten, Daniel, you were supposed to have left with us.”
“That doesn’t give you the right to keep me away from my daughter.”
“Come on, Grace. We’re leaving.” She took Grace with her and headed out, not even allowing Grace to say goodbye to him.
“This isn’t over, Rachel!” he yelled after her. Steve put his arm back around Danny. “I think you should get full custody of Grace.”
“Really?”
“Yes. Rachel is clearly unstable.”
Danny looked at him blankly.
“Well, first she’s married to you and then the two of you get a divorce. Then she marries Stan and moves to Hawaii. While still with Stan, she cheats on him with you. Then she plans on running back to the mainland with you. Now all of a sudden, she’s trying to work things out with Stan.”
“You know I wasn’t so great myself.”
Steve looked at him. “You didn’t really want to get back with Rachel. You were just scared of us.”
Damned if Steve wasn’t right. He had been afraid of what he and Steve could be. He had already been freaked out by just how much Steve had come to mean to him.
They finally made it out to Danny’s car and Steve drove them back to his house. It was where Danny spent most of his time when they weren’t working, despite the lack of sleeping together.
The car ride was silent until Danny finally spoke. “You were right, you know.”
“Of course I was,” replied Steve without missing a beat. “What was I right about?”
“I was scared of us. I’m sorry for everything.”
Steve reached out and grasped Danny’s hand. “You figured it out in the end. That’s all that matters.”
And right then Danny realized that maybe he didn’t deserve Steve.
“We’ll figure out something with Grace too. You don’t have to worry about that.”
He had Steve, Super SEAL, on his side. He wasn’t worried, and he told Steve as much. Steve’s whole face lit up and he squeezed Danny’s hand tighter. And it was then that Danny realized he was in love with Steve, the kind of love that you just didn’t come back from. And he had been in love with Steve for some time now. He also realized that Steve felt the exact same way about him, and Danny cursed himself for having been so stupid.
They made love for the first time that night. It was sweet and passionate and explosive.
Danny was never going to give this up, never going to give Steve up. He was happy and he was in love, and he and Steve would figure out what to do about Grace.
Danny could have easily missed out on all of this. He vowed never to be so stupid again.

Btw,I'm curious about the animation uderneath your story tags.
What is the animal, and is it ok?

So my mood theme is Planet Earth and I think that might just be a bear cub learning to walk.
