The last of his bags was finally packed, and Peter looked around his room excitedly. He was going to be spending two weeks camping in the desert with his brother, and he couldn’t be happier. Two whole weeks with just his brother. No parents, no school, and no job to get in the way.
The blare of the horn outside meant that Nathan was here. Peter grabbed his bags and ran down the stairs and out of the house. Nathan was driving them to the airport, and then they were going to catch a flight out to New Mexico. They were going to be spending their two weeks hiking and camping at a place called Ghost Ranch.
Nathan knew how Peter felt about him - he had known for a while now - and he was hoping that this trip meant that Nathan was finally going to do something about it.
*****
It was hot, though he wasn’t expecting it to be anything else considering it was summer in the desert.
He was helping Nathan set up their tent, except he wasn’t really helping because Nathan kept shooing him off saying he wasn’t doing it right. Peter gave up and sat down and watched as Nathan finished erecting the tent.
When Nathan finished, Peter picked up his bags and brought them into the tent. The inside was nice and roomy, room enough for their bags and for the both of them to stretch out and be comfortable.
Nathan followed him into the tent carrying his own belongings. “You ready to head to dinner?”
“Finally. I’m starving.”
Nathan rolled his eyes and walked out of the tent. Peter hurried out to follow him, making sure to zip up the tent after he got out. He caught up to Nathan, who swung an arm around his shoulders.
They were going to have actual cooked food while they were out here, and they would be eating with any of the other campers that happened to be here. There was running water too. Peter was glad for it. He was excited about the camping, but he was glad he could still have hot showers. Nathan wouldn’t care about hot showers, so Peter was pretty sure that Nathan had found this place for him, and he was thankful for that.
*****
Dinner was okay. They didn’t really interact with any of the other campers, and they didn’t linger over their food.
They finished their food and made their way slowly back to the campsite. The sun was setting and it was peaceful. The setting sun made it cooler than it had been earlier. He wrapped his arms around Nathan, trying to warm himself up. Nathan’s arms wrapped instinctively around him, and he snuggled as close as he could to Nathan without causing the two of them to trip.
They spread a blanket outside their tent and lay down to finish watching the sun set, and to watch the stars come out. They were on their backs with Peter’s head resting on Nathan’s shoulder, Nathan’s hands pillowing his own head.
It was so much clearer out here than in the city. Even if you know that the sky is filled with stars, it was completely different than actually seeing them. It was an incredible sight.
They hadn’t said a word since dinner. They didn’t need to. It was nice just being with Nathan like this.
Finally tired of looking at the stars, Peter rolled onto his side, slinging an arm around Nathan. Nathan’s arms wrapped around him and pulled him in closer. He felt himself begin to doze when Nathan shook him gently. “Hey, if you’re going to sleep then we should probably get inside the tent.”
Peter mumbled an agreement and let Nathan half carry him into the tent, and get him zipped into his sleeping bag. He felt Nathan push his sleeping bag against his own, and was asleep before Nathan had even zipped himself in.
*****
Peter woke up snuggled as close to Nathan as he could get while they were both in their separate sleeping bags. Nathan was already awake, and he was watching Peter.
Peter smiled. “Hey.”
“Hey.”
“What are we going to do today?”
“I thought we might go hiking. Is that okay?”
“Yeah. Sounds like fun.”
Neither bothered to get up though and Nathan reached out a hand and ruffled Peter’s hair. Peter purred and moved into the touch, so Nathan let his hand linger.
“What am I gonna do with you, Pete?” he murmured.
Peter smiled at him. “I can think of a few things.”
Nathan rolled his eyes, grabbed his toiletry bag, and left the tent. Peter sighed and grabbed his own bag, following Nathan out.
*****
He was pretty sure the morning sun had burned most of his exposed skin even though he had reapplied sunblock more than once.
They were eating lunch now, thankfully under some shade. Peter was exhausted. New Mexico, he decided, was way too hot, or at least way too hot for hiking. Nathan, of course, didn’t seem bothered by the sun at all. In fact, he seemed to thrive on anything that made Peter miserable. He probably hadn’t even noticed how miserable Peter was. Not that he was trying to make it known. Nathan was obviously having a good time and he didn’t want to spoil Nathan’s fun.
He felt Nathan’s hand on his shoulder. “Ready to head back down?”
He was surprised to hear Nathan say that. “Down? Don’t you want to keep going?”
“Maybe, but you don’t.”
“Oh. You noticed.”
Nathan’s hand moved off his shoulder, and his arm curled around his neck, pulling his head towards Nathan, and Nathan kissed the top of it. “Of course I noticed. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“You were having fun.”
“But I want you to have fun too. Come on. We’re going back.”
They made their way slowly back down, and Peter hated it as much as he hated the hike up.
They got back to the campsite and all Peter could think about was getting into a nice hot shower. Or maybe a cold shower. He couldn’t decide, so he started with a cold shower, and when he felt like he was no longer sweaty and disgusting, he turned the water to hot and just stood there under the stream, letting it soothe his tired muscles.
They were joined by some of the other campers for dinner this time. One of the girls was talking to Nathan. He couldn’t remember her name. He couldn’t remember any of their names. He hadn’t been too thrilled that they were imposing on his Nathan time.
He was pretty sure the girl was flirting with Nathan, so he was surprised with her question.
“You guys are really cute together, and you’re so happy around each other. How long have you been together?”
Nathan’s reaction surprised him even more than the question. With a huge grin on his face, he slung an arm around Peter and smooched his temple. “Too long.”
The entire table laughed, and Peter rolled his eyes at Nathan, who winked at him.
His pulse was racing, and his palms were starting to sweat. Nathan hadn’t corrected them and said that they were brothers, In fact, he had encouraged the boyfriend assumption. Hopefully that meant that Peter was finally about to have his big brother in the way he’d always wanted him.
He barely paid attention to the conversation the rest of dinner. He didn’t want to get his hopes up, but he couldn’t help but be excited.
They didn’t talk on the walk back to the campsite. He wondered what Nathan was thinking about. Did he regret contributing to the assumption that they were lovers? Was he planning on making it happen? Was he unhappy about spending the rest of his vacation with Peter, especially now that Peter would definitely not be hiking?
They laid out a blanket like they had the night before, and Peter lay on his stomach next to Nathan, who was on his back. He read the book that he had brought with him, hoping that reading would take his mind off of what had happened at dinner.
It worked for a little while, but thoughts of dinner wouldn’t leave him alone. He put his book down and looked at Nathan. His eyes were closed, and he looked peaceful. Anyone else might have thought that Nathan was asleep, but Peter knew better.
Maybe he should do something. He had never tried. He had never wanted to push Nathan into anything, no matter how much he had wanted it. If he had pushed, even just a little, Nathan would have given into him because Nathan could never refuse Peter anything.
He was willing to risk it now though because there was a chance that Nathan wanted this too.
He leaned over Nathan, their faces just inches apart.
“We shouldn’t do this,” Nathan whispered, his eyes still closed.
“Are you going to tell me no?”
Nathan opened his eyes and looked at Peter. He shook his head, just a small movement that Peter nearly missed, but it was enough. He closed the distance between them, keeping his eyes locked on Nathan’s, and touched their lips together, just barely. He did it again, and Nathan wrapped his arms around him, pulling Peter on top of him.
Nathan deepened the kiss and Peter lost himself in the sensations. He’d had sex before, with girls, and with guys, but kissing Nathan was better than anything he’d ever experienced. He’d never felt for them the way he did for Nathan.
Nathan shifted so that he was on his side, his arms still wrapped around Peter. He threw a leg over Peter’s, pulling him in even closer, and Peter could feel how much Nathan wanted this.
“How long have you wanted this?” he asked breathlessly, in between kisses.
“Too long.”
“Then why have you been making me wait?”
Nathan stopped kissing him, and Peter whimpered at the loss. He tried to chase Nathan’s lips, but Nathan pressed a couple of fingers to his lips, so Peter gave up with a sigh.
“So, why did you make me wait?”
“Peter, you’re my baby brother.”
“I still am. Oh, unless you think it’s not as bad now that I’m eighteen and no longer in high school.”
Nathan groaned and rolled onto his back. “Do you have to make this difficult? Can’t you just be happy that we’re doing this?”
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“Are you doing this now because we’re out here for two weeks alone? Do I only get this for two weeks?”
Nathan turned his head to look at him. “This is going to be harder in the city.”
“Harder, but not impossible.”
Nathan swallowed hard and sighed. “If we start this, I’m not going to want to stop. I’ve wanted you for too long.”
Peter didn’t say anything. He just looked at Nathan wondering if Nathan was telling the truth, wondering if they would continue this once they got back to New York.
“Hey.” Nathan reached out a hand and curled it around Peter’s neck. “I wouldn’t lie to you, Peter. Not about this.”
Peter nodded and leaned down to kiss Nathan again. They kissed under the stars until they heard some whistles and some loudly whispered words about how adorable they were. They broke apart laughing, Nathan waving at their onlookers.
He loved seeing this side of Nathan, this fun and free side of him. Nathan was always so serious.
When Nathan was done with the onlookers, he turned his attention back to Peter. “What do you say we move this to inside of the tent?”
“Finally. I thought you’d never ask.”
Peter laughed as he ducked out of the way of Nathan’s hand and headed into the tent. He ducked inside and dove for the sleeping bags, Nathan following close behind.
Two weeks in the middle of nowhere with his big brother was looking better than ever.
