There was a soft purring near his head, and a warm weight on his back. He opened his eyes to see Catiel curled up near his head, watching him sleep. Winchester would be the warm weight on his back. He could feel Cas’ breath tickling the hairs on the back of his neck, and could hear the snores coming from the direction of the bed that Sam was sleeping in.
They had been getting two rooms recently, but Sam had seen the wrong side of a werewolf, and Cas’ mojo had mysteriously disappeared, so he couldn’t heal Sam. Dean was just glad that Sam hadn’t been bitten by the werewolf, but until he recovered, or Cas got his mojo back, Dean insisted that Sam stay where Dean could keep an eye on him.
He enjoyed moments like these, when the animals were calm and Cas was lying in bed with him, and Sam in the other bed. If he didn’t want to have sex with Cas all of the time, then he would want things exactly like this.
He tried not to think about the wounds that were healing on Sam’s body, or the fact that he had to find the someone, or something, that was draining Cas’ grace, and instead focused on what he had with him right now in this room.
Times like this, he felt as though he had a regular life. Catiel gave him a lick on his cheek, like he knew exactly what Dean was thinking. Dean offered Catiel a small smile and drifted back off to sleep.
*******
When he woke up for the second time, the peacefulness had made way into chaos. Catiel was running around the room chasing some unknown thing that only he could see. Cas was feeding, or trying to feed, a very unhappy Winchester, and Sam was trying to rebandage his wounds. He looked like he hadn’t even had a cup of coffee, and he definitely looked like he was extremely unhappy with the sleeping arrangements.
Dean was surprised that he had managed to sleep through so much. He closed his eyes and groaned. Why couldn’t the room look like it had last night? He hoped he could pretend to be asleep for a little while longer, but Catiel had other ideas.
He apparently decided to take a break from chasing nothing, to jump onto the bed and walk on Dean’s back, before hopping down onto the pillow next to him and licking his face.
He shoved Catiel away from him. Catiel let out an angry “mrow,” and headed over to Sam, who had finished bandaging himself. Catiel rubbed up against him and began to purr. Sam tried to reach out to pet him, but pulled back, wincing in pain. Catiel, being the brilliant cat he was, even though he seemed to like to hide that fact as often as possible, hopped onto Sam’s lap and rubbed gently against his stomach. Lousy traitorous cat that had to be mean to him this morning and nice to Sam.
“Are you planning on getting up and helping out around here, or are you just going to lie around all day?” Sam was glaring at him. Before he could get out his retort, Cas spoke up.
“Oh, Dean, you’re up. Good”
A bunny and some lettuce were dumped unceremoniously next to him on the bed.
“See if you can get Winchester to eat.”
Sam was laughing at him quietly under his breath, when he grimaced. Dean smirked at him. It served him right for laughing at him. He sat up and held the lettuce out for Winchester. He twitched his nose and turned around. Dean threw down the lettuce.
“Fine. Starve. See if I care.” He got up and headed to the bathroom. He turned the water on just under scalding and got in the shower. For the most part, the animals didn’t really bother him. They were nice to have around, and Cas loved them, and if Cas loved them, then so did he.
There were days when he really wished they didn’t have the animals. Days like today when they were just being frustrating, and nights when he just wanted to be alone with Cas, and they wouldn’t stop bothering them, or they just kept staring. Sometimes he locked them in the bathroom, which Cas didn’t like, or took them over to Sam’s room, which Cas didn’t really mind.
He heard the bathroom door open and knew that it was Cas.
“Are you well, Dean?”
“I’m sorry I yelled at Winchester, Cas. I just…” Dean sighed. He was frustrated, yes, but he was surprised at the complete change in mood since just last night.
“You are worried about your brother, and you are worried about me.”
“Of course I am.”
“You do not need to be. We will be fine.”
”What if we can’t find whatever is doing this to you? What if we can’t get you back your mojo?”
“I will be fine.” The voice was coming from right behind him now. He turned around to find a very naked angel.
*******
When they finished in the shower, Sam was still sitting on the bed, blushing and feeding Winchester the lettuce, while Catiel purred in his lap.
“I want my own room.”
“Not until you’re better, Sammy.” He ruffled Sam’s hair just to annoy him further.
He left Sam and Cas in the room with the animals, and when he got back, things had quieted down a lot from earlier that morning. Cas had one of Catiel’s cat toys out and was keeping him entertained, while Sam sat at the table, laptop open doing research, while Winchester sat on the table and watched.
He dropped one of the bags of food down in front of Sam, and handed him a large, hot coffee, which he took gratefully.
“Find anything?”
“I think we’re dealing with a witch.”
“A witch? Cas, can a witch even do this to you?”
“If the witch was powerful enough, yes.”
“But there aren’t any hex bags. We’ve looked.”
“A witch powerful enough to weaken my grace would not need a hex bag.”
“Well great. How are we supposed to find her?”
“Actually,” Sam said,” I believe we’ve already talked to her.”
*******
That was how Dean found himself at some lady named Rose’s house with just Cas for company. Sam had wanted to come, but Dean had insisted that Sam stay at the motel and rest. Dean had also insisted that Catiel and Winchester stay with Sam. Cas was still mad at him for that.
Cas was trying to destroy the alter while Dean tried to keep Rose from killing them both. It really wasn’t going that well.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw something jump at Rose, and then he heard her scream. He looked over to see Catiel attacking her. He heard Cas destroy the alter, and once again proving to Dean that there was something more to this cat, Catiel hopped back off of Rose and went purring over to Cas.
*******
He hated when the bad guys were human. There wasn’t anything they could do about Rose. They had destroyed anything she had relating to magic, except for the books. They kept those for Bobby because you never know when one of them would come in handy. That was all they could do though.
He looked over at Cas, who was sitting next to him in the Impala, even though he could mojo back to the motel now. “I thought I told you to leave Catiel at the motel?”
“Dean, I believe that Catiel just saved both your life and mine.”
“Catiel could have been seriously hurt though.”
“Dean, you are still underestimating Catiel’s capabilities.”
“Yes, how did Catiel get these capabilities?”
“I didn’t do anything, if that’s what you’re implying.”
“So you just happened to find the world’s smartest cat?”
“Does it matter, Dean?”
Cas placed a hand on Dean’s leg, and Dean instantly relaxed. Cas always seemed to have that effect on him.
“No, I suppose it doesn’t.” He pulled the Impala into the motel parking lot.
“I guess I owe you a thank you,” he said, picking Catiel up off of Cas’ lap. “Thanks for saving us, Catiel.”
He glanced over at Cas. “If you ever tell Sam that I thanked Catiel…” he let the threat trail off. Not that he could really do anything to the angel. Maybe withhold sex, but that just wasn’t going to happen.
“Let’s go inside, Dean. I need to heal Sam so we can have our own room again.”
And if Cas smiled at him like that all of the time, then he probably wouldn’t be too upset if Cas told Sam what he had done.
