“What the hell is going on in here?”
Dean had been gone just long enough to pick up food, and his motel room had somehow managed to disintegrate into utter chaos.
He set down the bags of food, and was glad he did because suddenly there was a ball of fur hurtling towards him. He caught Catiel and he happened to catch a glance of Sam grabbing a bag of food as he practically ran out of the room towards his own, yelling “he’s your boyfriend” as he did so.
Dean’s jaw was hanging open and he wondered if he had managed to walk into some sort of alternate reality.
“Hello, Dean.” Cas was standing right next to him now, and kissed him in greeting, like he always did now, and it was then that Dean noticed that Cas had something in his arms, and that it was making Catiel squirm in his.
“Cas, why do you have a bunny?”
“He was hurt when I found him, so I healed him. He didn’t want to leave me.”
Dean let out what could only be described as a half sob and a groan.
“Cas, you can’t keep taking in animals. They aren’t safe with us.”
“No harm has come to Catiel.”
“Catiel is just one cat. The more animals we have, the more likely they are to get hurt.”
Cas looked at Dean like Dean had just told him that Catiel had been thrown under a car and was dead. Dean hated when Cas looked at him like that.
“Does this mean you are going to make me send Winchester away?”
“Winchester? Really? Cas, we really need to teach you how to name your animals.”
Cas didn’t say anything - he just looked at him. There was no way that Dean could say no to Cas. He was sure that would get him into trouble one day, but right now, he didn’t really care.
“Okay. You can keep Winchester, but only if you promise that you won’t take in any more animals.”
Before he could blink, Catiel had vanished from his arms, and they were instead wrapped around Cas, who was kissing him deeply. He was in the process of removing Cas’ trench coat when Catiel hissed.
“What’s the matter with Catiel? Dean asked, not bothering to pull away from Cas’ lips. Cas pulled away, however, a pained expression on his face.
“Catiel does not like Winchester.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me, Cas. You want to keep Winchester when Catiel doesn’t even like him?”
“They just need time to get used to each other.”
“That should be easy with Catiel trying to scratch Winchester’s ears.”
Man, those names were going to give him a headache.
Cas whirled around. “Catiel. No.” Cas rushed over to scoop up Catiel and Dean figured he’d better find out if the damn bunny was okay.
Dean scooped the shivering bunny into his arms and had to admit that Winchester was actually pretty cute.
“Cas, can’t you use your mojo to make Catiel like Winchester? Like a cat whisperer.”
Cas tilted his head and looked at Dean. Right. Angel.
“I’ve tried talking to Catiel, but he will not listen to me.”
Dean moved over to where Cas and Catiel where, a shivering Winchester still in his arms. He was so glad that Sam wasn’t in the room to witness this.
“Come on Catiel. Why don’t you like Winchester? He’s cute and cuddly and just wants to be your friend.” He could swear that Catiel was glaring at him. He felt like he was talking to a child. “Don’t look at me in that tone of voice. Just because Winchester is part of the family now doesn’t mean we love you any less.”
Cas was seriously going to owe him for this. For a while too. Then miracle of all miracles, Catiel reached out a paw, sans claw, and petted Winchester. Dean wondered if some of Cas’ mojo was rubbing off on Catiel or if Cas had just managed to find the only damn magical cat in existence.
Cas put Catiel on the floor, so Dean did the same with Winchester. Catiel began purring and rubbing up against Winchester. Cas beamed at him and then sat on the floor to play with his animals.
Dean sat at the table and ate, and when he was done, he sprawled out on the bed, chin resting on his hands, and watched Cas play with Catiel and Winchester. Cas looked over at Dean and scooted away from the animals, resting his back against the bed.
“Thank you for fixing this, Dean.”
Dean was about to say something when a very random thought popped into his head. He blamed it on the way he and Cas were sitting. That stupid Spiderman movie and that stupid kiss scene that was plastered everywhere when that movie had just come out.
Cas would probably enjoy it. He shifted over so that he was directly behind Cas and then titled Cas’ head back and leaned over to kiss him. He’d never kissed anyone like this before and it was very strange, but it was Cas, and that was all that mattered.
When he pulled away, Cas was smiling at him, and he knew that the happiness he saw on Cas’ face was reflected in his own. He looked up and saw Catiel and Winchester curled up together, asleep.
Somehow, this angel had found a place in his life, his heart, and now they even had a little family. He had managed what he never believed possible. He had the domestic life and the hunter’s life all rolled up into one very strange package.
He should probably be completely freaked out, but he was too happy to bother.
