A/N: I used all four plot bunnies from this post.

He looked at the box on the passenger seat for about the twentieth time since he had gotten in the car. He was nervous about it even though he figured that Steve would like it.

Mostly, he had just wanted to buy Steve a gift. The way Steve’s eyes had lit up when he thought that Danny had bought something for him… he had felt like shit having to tell Steve it wasn’t from him.

That had been soon forgotten though when he had gotten to give Steve a hard time for trying to buy car parts off the internet. But when he had gotten home that night, he had remembered that look and it had haunted him since.

He pulled up to Steve’s house, took a deep breath, and got out of the car. He walked into the house without knocking. He couldn’t remember ever having knocked, and even though Steve always gave him a hard time for it, he was pretty sure he didn’t actually care.

Steve was at his table eating breakfast. “I’m pretty sure we’ve talked about this knocking thing.”

“Oh, don’t worry. We have.”

“You don’t even have to wait for an answer. Just knock, and then you can enter.”

“I’m sure I’ll remember to do that next time.”

“What’s in the box, Danno?”

“It’s a present for you.”

Steve scowled at him, and Danny figured he had that coming.

“No, it really is a present for you. It was dropped off this morning and I wanted to get it to you before I picked up Grace.”

“You brought me a present?”

Danny rolled his eyes and shoved the box across the table. Steve’s eyes had lit up again, and it was all he could do to not drag Steve across the table and kiss him for all he was worth.

Steve tore into the box and his eyes lit up even more when he saw what was inside. Danny didn’t think it was much, but he had made it personal and he figured that was what Steve liked about it.

“Danno…”

“Hey look, it’s no big deal. I should go now though, I’ve got to pick Grace up.”

“No, wait.” Steve took off running up the stairs, so Danny sat and waited. He had gotten Steve an emblem for the car he was building. It was the SEAL trident, and he had gotten Steve’s name engraved on it.

It really wasn’t that much, and that made him wonder how often people thought about Steve. Steve was always thinking of others, but nobody ever thought of him. Until now. Danny would make sure to take care of him.

Steve came back down the stairs fully dressed. “Okay I’m ready. Let’s go get Grace.”

“Oh, so now you’re just inviting yourself along to spend time with my daughter.”

Steve shrugged. “Consider it payback for all those times you walked into my house without knocking.”

“Let me get this straight. What you’re saying is because I don’t knock when I walk into your house, you’re going to invite yourself to spend the day with me and my daughter.”

“That’s exactly it.” Steve called out, already walking out the front door.

“You do realize that that’s the kind of logic that only makes sense in your head, right?”

“It makes perfect sense, Danny. Just because you aren’t smart enough to work it out…”

“Oh, I’m plenty smart, and don’t you dare get in the driver’s seat. We’re picking up my daughter, so I’m driving.”

Steve backed away from the driver’s door, hands in the air, and walked around to get in the passenger’s seat.

They spent a couple of minutes arguing about the music, an argument that Danny was proud to say he won. He had been so focused on the package on the way to Steve’s house that he hadn’t even looked up at Grace’s picture, something he tried to do at least once a day.

He glanced up and right next to the picture of his little girl, was a picture of Steve. Danny, who always had words for everything, didn’t even know what to think.

“Hey Steve.”

“Yeah?”

“Do you remember when you gave me a hard time about the postcard of New Jersey?”

“Yes. It was awful having to look at that. You are still not allowed to put any pictures up there without my approval.”

“Don’t you think that should work both ways?”

“What are you talking about?”

He grabbed the picture of Steve, and shoved it at the man himself.

“What’s wrong with this?”

“What is it doing there?”

“You have a picture of Grace in your car, so I decided you needed one of me.”

“There’s more of that twisted Steve logic that only you understand. Okay, Kono would probably understand it too, but that’s not the point.”

“Then what is the point?”

“People already think we are married. You’re just fueling the fire. And I still don’t understand why you think I need a picture of you in my car. Next to my daughter’s picture.”

Steve still had the picture in his hand, and a wounded look on his face, the one that Danny seemed to put there more than anyone, and he didn’t know if that was only because he didn’t know how to keep his mouth shut, or if it was because Steve cared so much about him that even if Danny wasn’t being serious, he could hurt Steve’s feelings.

He hoped it was the latter, not because he wanted to hurt Steve’s feeling, but because he hoped that Steve reciprocated his feelings.

He grabbed the picture out of Steve’s hands and put it back next to Grace. It was a good picture anyway. Steve was laughing.

“I thought you didn’t want my picture up there.”

“I never said I didn’t want it up there, and if you had been listening then you would have known that. I just wanted to know what the hell it was doing up there.”

Steve didn’t say anything, but Danny could tell he was happy, even though he wasn’t smiling. He was an expert in the many faces of Steve.

He pulled up to Rachel’s house where both he and Steve got out of the car, and buzzed them to let them know he was here. A few minutes later, Grace was walking towards them.

“Danno!” Grace shouted as she started running towards Danny. He knelt down and opened his arms, catching Grace as she ran right into them. It wasn’t until they finally pulled apart that he realized that Grace was holding something.

“Hey Monkey, what’s this?”

“It’s a seal. It’s for Steve.”

“You bought a seal for Steve?”

“Yep.” She turned to Steve. “Mommy said you were out here so I brought this out for you. I bought it because Danno says you’re a Super Seal.”

Danny smiled and looked over at Steve, who looked at him with an expression on his face that Danny had never seen before, before kneeling in front of Grace.

“You bought me a seal because I’m a Super Seal?”

Grace nodded and handed Steve the stuffed animal. Steve took it and smiled at her.

“Thanks, Gracie. That was really sweet of you.” Steve pulled Grace in for a hug.

Danny’s heart ached at the scene in front of him. He wanted so badly for Steve to be an even bigger part of his life. More than he already was. Every time someone asked them how long they had been married for, or made some other similar crack, he only wanted it that much more.

He pulled his mind away from those thoughts, and instead focused on the fact that Grace now had Steve wrapped around her little finger. He chuckled under his breath. As much as Steve already adored Grace, he was now completely screwed. He was willing to bet that Steve would never be able to say no to Grace now.

When Steve and Grace had finished hugging, they all piled into the car, Steve squishing in the back so that Grace could sit up front.

“Where are we off to today, Gracie?”

“I want to go to the mall.”

Danny chuckled when heard Steve groan from the back seat.

“Mall it is,” he said, making sure he didn’t make eye contact with Steve in the rearview mirror. He wanted to invite himself to Danny’s day with Grace, then he could just suffer.

Grace held each of their hands as they walked through the mall, and Danny couldn’t help thinking about how right it felt.

They went to the Disney Store, and Grace managed to talk Steve into buying her more stuffed animals than she could carry.

“What are you doing,” he asked Steve at the register.

“What?”

“You’re spoiling her. She doesn’t need all of those stuffed animals.”

“I just wanted to do something nice for her.”

Danny rolled his eyes and walked away. There was no way he was going to start something in front of his daughter, and Steve probably knew that and was using it to his advantage.

He waited outside the store, and finally Steve walked out with a huge shopping bag in one hand, and Grace’s hand in the other, and maybe Danny’s heart skipped a beat at the sight. Maybe.

“We’re hungry, Danno,” Steve said, huge grin on his face because he just loved annoying Danny.

“Fine. Grace,” he said taking her free hand, “what do you want for lunch?”

“I want pizza.”

“I want pizza too.”

Danny ignored Steve. “Pizza it is, Grace.”

During lunch, Steve kept Grace entertained with stories that he had edited so that they were child appropriate. When Grace had finished eating, she announced that she wanted to go to the bookstore, so they threw out their trash, and headed that way.

He was in the children’s section with Grace when Steve shoved a book at him. It was a Hawaiian guidebook.

“Are you trying to tell me something, Steven?”

“Not a thing, Danno. Not a thing.”

Grace came up to him then with a stack of books in her arms, so Danny shoved the book back at Steve, and took the toppling pile of books from Grace.

“You’re gonna buy her all of those?”

“Yeah, I am.”

“After giving me a hard time about all of the stuffed animals?”

“There is a huge difference between stuffed animals and books. I’m more than happy to spend money on books for her.”

Steve looked at him for a moment, then took the books out of Danny’s hands and headed for the register. He grabbed Grace’s hand and followed.

“What do you think you’re doing? I can buy my own daughter her books.”

“I know you can, Danny, but I want to buy them.”

“You already bought her the stuffed animals.”

“And you paid for lunch.”

“So, what? That means it’s your turn now?”

“Sure, Danno.”

He would have said something more, but Grace was giving both of them funny looks. They left the bookstore and Steve was now carrying two large shopping bags. They walked around for a while longer, but he had to get Grace back to her mother’s in time for dinner.

“Time to go. Gracie has to be home for dinner.” Both of his children complained very loudly all the way back to the car.

When they got in the car, Grace turned very serious. “I have a question for the two of you.”

“What’s the matter, Grace?”

“Nothing. It’s just something I’ve been wondering about. Are you two boyfriends?”

Danny opened and closed his mouth a few times, but for the second time that day, he was stricken speechless, but Steve was chuckling in the backseat. He leaned forward to talk to Grace.

“No, we aren’t.”

“Why not?”

“We just aren’t.”

“But you two are so much happier together than Mom and Step Stan.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. You guys are always talking and laughing and picking on each other. They don’t do that.”

Danny still hadn’t been able to bring himself to say anything.

“Do you guys love each other?”

Danny was so very glad that Grace had asked that while he was stopped at a red light. He caught Steve’s eyes in the rearview mirror. They could easily tell Grace that they loved each other as friends, but that wasn’t what Grace was asking, and even though she wouldn’t understand the difference, he and Steve both remained silent.

They dropped Grace off with Rachel. He had to explain that the bags were Steve’s doing. He said goodbye to Grace, told her that Danno loved her, and made his way back to the car. Whatever else had just happened with Rachel had all been a blur.

“Where to now, Danny?”

“Home.” He didn’t want to deal with what had just happened, what Grace had brought up.

“How about we swing by your place so you can change into some old clothes, and then we can go to my place and work on the car.”

“The car you were supposed to work on with your dad.”

“Yeah.”

“You want me to work on it with you.”

“Yes.”

That was impossible to say no to. That was something special, and Steve was inviting him to be a part of it.

“Okay. I don’t know anything about cars though.”

“It’s okay.”

He tossed the keys to Steve since he had behaved himself around his daughter, and climbed into the passenger seat. They drove in silence, and Danny wondered if Steve was avoiding talking about what Grace had asked about just as much as he was.

At his place, he changed into some old clothes while Steve waited in the car. He briefly wondered if he should pack a bag with some clothes. He could only hope that the weekend would head that way, but he didn’t want to be too optimistic, especially if they ignored what Grace has asked.

They got back to Steve’s place, and Steve grabbed the seal stuffed animal from the backseat. He watched as Steve placed it in a spot in the living room where Grace was sure to see it the next time she visited.

They grabbed a couple of beers and headed out to the garage. He tried to pay attention to what Steve was saying, but he was having a hard time focusing on anything except watching Steve work.

“Danny.”

The sound of his name broke him out of his reverie.

“What?”

“Have you been paying attention to anything I’ve said?”

“No. Sorry.”

“I didn’t realize that this would be that boring for you, Danny. You can go if you want.”

“What? No. It’s not that. I just…” he trailed off and sighed, running a hand through his hair. He left the garage and sat at the kitchen table. Steve followed him in, but washed his hands before joining him at the table.

“Your daughter is pretty perceptive.”

So they were going to do this then.

“She is.”

“So, does this mean you’re in love with me?”

He hadn’t expected Steve to be so direct, but answering a question was still easier than saying the actual words, for now anyway.

“Yes.”

Steve nodded, but neither of them said anything. Finally, Danny couldn’t take the silence.

“So, what about you?”

“What about me?”

“Don’t be an ass. Not now.”

“Yeah. Me too.”

“Oh.”

Silence fell in the kitchen again. So they were both in love with each other. Wait, then why the hell were they just both sitting there? He grabbed Steve’s shirt and pulled him towards him.

The kiss was completely awkward and horribly messy. It was far from anything he had imagined with Steve. They broke away and laughed.

“Jesus, Danno. That was terrible.”

“Hey,” he poked Steve in the chest. “I wasn’t the only one doing the kissing there, babe.”

Steve smiled at him and grabbed his shirt, right where his tie would normally be. He tried to hide it, but Danny had caught the scowl.

“I think you miss my tie.”

Steve looked him in the eye. “I don’t think so, baby.”

Danny laughed. “You are such a liar.”

Steve pulled him out of the chair and pushed him against the wall. He leaned down and kissed Danny. The kiss was definitely better than the first. Steve’s tongue licked its way into Danny’s mouth, and he groaned into the kiss, wrapping his arms around Steve and pulling him in closer.

He tugged at Steve’s t-shirt, and Steve broke from the kiss only long enough to allow Danny to pull the shirt off, and then for Steve to pull Danny’s off. Steve kissed him and walked him backwards towards the stairs. They fumbled their way up and made their way to the bedroom. Finally, Steve shoved Danny down on the bed.

“I owe you a thank you for the gift you got me.”

Danny was going to say something, but Steve’s hands were all over him and he couldn’t remember what he was going to say, couldn’t think of anything except for him and Steve, right there and then.

********

They got in Danny’s car Monday morning, Danny in the driver’s seat. They were going to stop by Danny’s place before heading into headquarters so that Danny could change into work clothes since he’d spent the rest of the weekend at Steve’s. Naked.

He looked up at the picture of Grace, and right there, next to the pictures of Steve and his daughter was a new picture.

It was a picture of him, Steve and Grace that some shopper had taken of them at the mall on Saturday. The three of them were smiling.

He had no idea when Steve had managed to print it and then sneak out of the house to put it in the car. They had barely left the bed over the weekend. Somehow though, because he was Steve, he had managed.

Danny smiled and headed for his place. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see that Steve was smiling too. It was a picture they both approved of.
