switch_discuss because we have lots of crazy comments and so much love over there. I tried to do a little bit of everything mentioned and I hope you guys enjoy this :)
My muse likes writing mirrorverse so I had to fight really hard with it so that Jim and Bones wouldn't do anything evil. I won. At least I think I won, because there are now two mirrorverse story ideas floating around in my brain, and one of them involves knitting??? I don't even try to understand...
Jim whistled as he worked in the kitchenette. Bones wouldn’t be back for about an hour, and Jim was going to make sure to have this fantastic dinner ready to go before then. They finally had some time to themselves, and Jim was going to make sure that this was a shore leave that Bones would never forget. They had beamed down earlier that morning and they’d already spent most of their day making use of the bed in their room, but Bones had wanted to get out and walk around. That worked perfectly for Jim because he had wanted this dinner to be a surprise.
Bones had always like Jim’s cooking, but Jim was going to blow him away with dinner tonight. He was making all of Bones’ southern favorites like fried chicken, potato salad, corn, and of course, for dessert there was going to be peach cobbler. Jim wanted everything to be perfect tonight. He was planning on proposing to Bones. He wasn’t going to do it tonight though because that was too cliché. Jim planned on proposing in the morning.
As Jim continued working around the kitchenette, his eyes caught a glimpse of blue on the couch. Jim smiled as he saw how much Bones had already finished on the scarf in the little bit of time he had managed to work on it. Bones loved to knit. It was a shock when Jim had found out about it. He had opened the door to their dorm room one day during their second year to find Bones sitting on his bed and knitting a sweater. Bones had looked sheepish, but Jim had been completely turned on and had immediately jumped Bones. That had been the first time, and they’d been together ever since.
The knitting had become an almost nightly ritual. Before bed they’d sit in bed together and Bones would knit. Jim loved watching him and sometimes, if Bones was in a good mood, he would help Bones roll the yarn into a ball. It was a soothing hobby for both of them, as knitting helped Bones relax, and Jim would become so entranced by the movement of Bones’ hands and the needles that he would just forget about the day. They had been lucky enough to continue this ritual when they started on the Enterprise.
Jim’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Jim picked up one of the glasses of sweet tea from the table and walked over to greet Bones, placing the glass in his hand and a kiss on his lips.
“Just in time,” he whispered as he pulled Bones over to the table.
“Jesus kid, you really outdid yourself here,” he said, as he looked up at Jim, the adoration and love apparent in his eyes. He smiled at Jim – not one of his small smiles that he gives all of the time, but one of his huge, just for Jim smiles that still made Jim blush because they happened so rarely.
Dinner was the casual easy-going affair that it always was. Talk was mostly about the planet they were on. Artoria was a newly discovered paradise that Starfleet made good use of for shore leave. It was a beautiful planet, covered with crystal clear turquoise water, pristine white beaches, and two gorgeously large moons.
On the other hand, the nights were extremely cold and the planet seemed to be overrun with cats. Well okay. It wasn’t really overrun with cats, but there did seem to be a fair number of them. They were just like the little domestic house cats that people keep as pets back on Earth. They were friendly little cats too, always purring and rubbing up against your legs. Jim was glad that of all the allergies he had, he had been lucky enough to avoid the cat dander one.
After they cleared the table Bones settled onto the couch with his knitting while Jim went to open the window to let the crisp, cool air in. He joined Bones on the couch when he was done, picking up the ball of yarn to play with while Bones knitted. Jim became entranced by the speed of the needles and Bones hands, and didn’t even notice when a visitor joined them.
“Damn it,” Bones muttered, snapping Jim out of his trance. Jim looked over to see one of the native cats batting at the yarn that Bones was trying to knit with. “Damn it Jim, do something.”
Jim did the only thing possible. He started laughing. Jim laughed so hard he nearly fell off of the couch. When he was finally able to catch his breath, he picked the cat up off of Bones’ lap. When Jim looked up at Bones smiling, he was only met with anger. Jim had no idea why Bones was so angry so he just quietly got up and took the cat to the open window. After he let her out, he closed the window so there wouldn’t be a repeat performance.
When Bones finished knitting the scarf he got up without a word and headed to the bed.
“Bones?” Jim followed him, unsure if he would be welcome in the bed that night, for reasons he didn’t even understand. Bones didn’t even turn around: “Not tonight Jim,” was the only reply he got.
As Jim got ready for bed he worried over what could possibly be wrong with Bones. Was Bones mad because he had laughed at the cat incident? That didn’t make any sense. Not only had it been funny, but it had been really adorable as well. Jim slept restlessly that night wondering what was wrong with Bones, and more importantly, should he still propose in the morning?
Jim was woken with sweet kisses from Bones in the morning. “I’m sorry,” Bones whispered when Jim was fully awake. Jim smiled and knew that the proposal was still going to happen.
“Close your eyes.” Amazingly enough, Bones did so without arguing. He hardly even grumbled. Jim’s smile grew infinitely brighter as he reached for the box that he had hidden away. He opened the box and held it near Bones’ face so he would be able to see the ring.
“Okay, open your eyes.” As Bones’ eyes took in the ring he started smiling, but it soon turned into outright laughter dimming Jim’s own smile.
“Bones-,” Jim started, but Bones held up a finger to stop him and hopped out of bed. Bones picked up the blue scarf and headed back to the bed.
“This is for you. That’s why I was so upset last night. I wanted it to be perfect for you,” he said, wrapping the scarf around Jim’s neck. “I made this because I was planning on taking you for a picnic tonight out on the beach.” Bones had been rummaging through one of his duffel bags while he had been talking. He came back to Jim with a little box in his hand and opened it. “I was going to give this to you tonight. “ Jim laughed when he saw what was in the box. It was a ring. As a matter of fact, it was the exact ring that Jim had picked up for Bones.
Jim pulled Bones in for a long, sweet kiss. When they pulled apart Jim started to unwrap the scarf from around his neck, but Bones’ hand shot out to stop him.
“Leave the scarf on.”

Date: 2010-03-23 06:22 am (UTC)To the author: This was completely wonderful. I was in the mood for some major fluff and you filled that quota for me. Loved the fact that they both bought the same ring and planned on giving it to each other after some serious buttering up.

Date: 2010-03-23 01:30 pm (UTC)One of the guys told me that they were going to have the same ring. It must have been Jim because I was writing and then the next thing I know he realizes that it's the same ring :)
Smart boys they are!
