A/N: Companion piece to The Art of Subtlety because I know you guys want to know what happened under the mistletoe :)
He heard Kono leave and pulled his gaze away from the mistletoe to look at Danny. Danny was wearing the same expression he was.
It’s not that Steve hadn’t thought about it, he just never really allowed himself to believe that it was a possibility. He didn’t want to screw up their partnership or their friendship.
He had thought that he had caught Danny looking a couple of times, and with Kono having just maneuvered them into this position, then maybe he actually had caught Danny, and maybe Kono had seen something between the two of them. Maybe this could be something then.
“So, are we going to do this?”
“What, kiss under the mistletoe? Kono is gone now, so we don’t have to.”
Danny made no move to go though, and he looked nervous, something that Steve never saw, even with all of the almost dying that Danny claimed Steve put him through.
He just looked at Danny, not saying anything, willing him to understand that that wasn’t what he had meant. Danny apparently got the message because he sighed and ran a hand though his hair.
“I don’t know.”
Simple. Honest. It gave Steve hope though, because it meant that Danny had in fact been thinking about it too.
“I want to,” he whispered, hardly daring to believe that he was admitting it out loud. Danny’s eyes widened at the confession and then let loose with a speech that sounded like he’d been holding it back for some time.
“You’re about a hundred different types of crazy. You’re not happy unless you’re blowing things up, jumping off of buildings, tackling suspects, getting shot at, and so much more other crazy shit. But God help me, because I want to, too.”
“That was so romantic, Danny. I think I might swoon. Maybe I should just leave you here under the mistletoe.”
“I’m sorry. Would you rather I write you a love poem? Maybe an ode to your insanity?”
“Maybe while you are at it, you could write an ode to your precious New Jersey.”
“I could do that. Then I could recite it every single time we’re alone together. Would you like that?”
“What’s scary is that you would. You would just call it payback for all of those times that I supposedly almost got you killed.”
“Supposedly?” Danny muttered some more under his breath, but he was smiling, and Steve couldn’t resist smiling too.
“So are you going to get me out from under the mistletoe, or are you just going to leave me standing here all night?”
“Now see, that sounds tempting.”
“You do that and I will write that ode to New Jersey.”
Steve laughed and was surprised when Danny grabbed his shirt and pulled him down for a kiss. It was a brief kiss, too brief by Steve’s standards, and then Danny was shoving him away, smirking as he did so.
Danny started walking away, and all Steve could do was watch, jaw dropped, wondering what the hell had just happened. He thought Danny had wanted this, but now he was just walking away like nothing had happened.
Danny stopped at the door and turned to face Steve.
“Are you taking me back to your place or not?”
Steve rolled his eyes and followed Danny out. At least there would never be a boring day with Danny.
