“Do you think it’s possible that we could go for, oh I don’t know, maybe a day without one of your crazy stunts?” Danny was trailing after Steve, arms waving around like mad.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. There is nothing wrong with what I did.”
Kono watched as they disappeared into Steve’s office, door closing behind them, Danny’s arms still waving around. She looked over at Chin and they both rolled their eyes.
It was just another Thursday in the office.
She sighed and stretched. She had hoped that by now they would have both gotten their heads out of their asses and just go for it. She was pretty sure they each knew how they felt, and were just worried that they were reading the signals from the other person wrong.
There was still a tension in the air when they bickered, and she caught the lingering looks they gave each other when the other wasn’t watching. This was how she knew that they hadn’t done anything about their feelings yet. Men.
She had heard when Danny had called Steve “babe” and had ignored it. Steve hadn’t reacted to it either, and she had hoped that maybe that would do the trick. If anything, the lingering looks had gotten longer.
She wondered what exactly it would take for them to realize it. She knew how often people teased them about being married and she wondered if either of them had thought to examine that a little more closely.
She honestly thought that they would be good together. They worked together well professionally and they had a solid friendship. They each took the good with the bad, and she was pretty sure that Steve would be crazier without Danny around, and that Danny would be wound much more tightly without Steve around.
She needed to get them together, and she needed to do it fast, otherwise she might resort to locking them in a closet together, and she really didn’t want to deal with the aftermath of that.
She needed something a little more subtle than that. The little Christmas party they were going to have at the office for themselves. Of course. That could work. She could make sure they both had enough of the eggnog spiked with rum so that they were relaxed, but not so much that they were drunk. She could also make sure to hang mistletoe around the places in their headquarters where Steve and Danny frequented.
The party would be Saturday night. Friday, she would spend some time talking to each of them about the other. Make sure that it was in front of their minds for Saturday.
It wasn’t the most creative plan ever, but she didn’t care, so long as it worked. She turned to Chin to tell him her plan, and to make sure he was aware of all the mistletoe that would be hung around the building on Saturday.
*************
“Hey Danny. Do you want to go for some coffee and malasadas?” It was midmorning Friday and there wasn’t much going on, so she figured she would start with Danny.
“Coffee and malasadas? Kono, you are my new favorite person.”
As they left the building she could see Steve scowling at them. Good. A little jealousy never hurt anyone.
As they made their way over to the stand, she let Danny complain about the lack of snow and the lack of cold, and then she asked him questions about New Jersey, something that Steve had probably never done before.
They ordered their food and their coffee and found a table to sit at. She figured now was as good a time as any to start. And really, it was too easy.
“So, does Steve really pull some crazy stunt everyday?”
“I guess not, but some of the ones he pulls sure makes it feel that way.”
“Oh come on. He can’t be that bad.”
Danny snorted. “Okay, switch partners with me for one day, and then try to tell me he can’t be that bad.”
Kono laughed at that. “No, I don’t think so. He’s all yours.”
“Lucky me.”
“Oh please. You guys work well together.”
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“Don’t give me that. You know you do. And you must like the guy to have stuck around, despite all of the complaining that you do.”
“He’s not so bad when he’s not trying to get me killed.”
Kono had to bite back a groan. Obviously this was going to take a little more work. At least she thought it would. Danny chose just that moment to start talking.
“He’s a decent guy. He’s loyal, he’s devoted to what he does. He’s a good friend. He’s crazy and suicidal, and he got me shot just a few hours after meeting him, but I don’t regret meeting him that day. I don’t regret staying on with Five-0. Sometimes I’m not sure why I put up with him, but then I’m not sure why he puts up with me. All I know is that Hawaii is finally starting to feel like home.”
“Sounds like you guys have a good thing going.”
It had been a mistake to talk. Danny looked like he had clammed up and wasn’t going to say anything more.
“We should get back now,” he said, not making eye contact with her. She was pretty sure that he thought he had said too much, and she was glad for that. It meant that this would still be fresh in his mind at the party.
They made their way back to headquarters in silence, and as soon as they were inside, Steve whisked Danny away for who knows what. Steve may as well be wearing a sign that said “Danny is mine” or maybe Danny should be wearing a sign that said “Property of Steve”.
Either way, Steve was clearly annoyed by what had just happened. She smiled to herself and sat down at her desk. She was going to attempt to get some work done before she had her talk with Steve later.
*************
Steve had been glued to Danny’s side since the malasadas run this morning. It was kind of cute, but right now it was mostly annoying. She needed to get Steve alone.
Finally, finally, Danny’s phone rang, and he left Steve to go talk in his own office. She watched as Steve’s eyes followed Danny all the way back to his office.
She walked into Steve’s office.
“Hey boss.”
“Kono, what can I do for you?”
“Nothing. Just wanted to chat. Is your sister going to be around for Christmas??
“As far as I know, she’s not going to be around.”
“You’re not going to be alone for Christmas, are you?”
Steve shrugged. “It won’t be so bad.”
“Well, what about Danny? Even if he does have Grace I’m sure they would both love to spend Christmas with you.”
Steve shrugged again and it took all of Kono’s willpower to not smack him upside the head.
“Seriously, Steve. I’m sure Danny would love to spend the holidays with you.”
She got up and left before Steve could start asking her questions. She could only hope that something had made its way through that thick skull.

The presents had already been exchanged, and they’d all had a considerable amount of eggnog. Steve and Danny, both relaxed by the rum, were sitting far too close, though neither seemed to notice.
She glanced over at Chin and he shook his head at her, a smile on his face. Things were working out nicely. She just needed to figure out a way to maneuver them under the mistletoe. There was enough of it around that it shouldn’t be too hard.
They were comfortable and relaxed, and nobody seemed in a hurry to go anywhere, but she was in a hurry to get them under the mistletoe, so she stretched and yawned.
“Well, I don’t know about the rest of you, but anymore eggnog and I’m not going to be able to drive home.”
There was a murmured consent among the group, and everyone started getting their things together to leave. Chin made short work of his goodbyes and took off. He probably didn’t want to be around to watch this little charade.
She walked alongside Steve, who was walking next to Danny, as they headed out of headquarters. They were just a little too far left of the mistletoe.
To hell with subtlety. She knocked into Steve, which knocked Danny under the mistletoe. Steve reached out a hand to help her, but she had already straightened up and was smirking at them. Steve was opening his mouth to say something, but she cut him off.
“Goodnight gentlemen,” she said, looking up at the ceiling above Danny, and then back down at them. They were both looking up at the mistletoe, mouths wide open.
She smiled and walked out. She had considered hiding out to spy on them, but decided not to push her luck. Hopefully she would find out what happened on Monday.
*********
Danny walked in smiling, with what could be a hickey peeking out from his collar. Chin must have seen it too because he was looking over at her, laughing under his breath. She winked at him and turned back to her work as bickering started up in Steve’s office.
Just another Monday at the office.
