It was like being on drugs. At least, if she knew what being on drugs was like. She assumed it felt very much like this though.
She was aware of what was going on, but it was almost like she wasn’t a part of her body. She had no control over herself. Her brain was riding passenger to something else.
Whatever this demon had been, he had done something to her. She just wasn’t entirely sure yet what that something was.
She was walking. She didn’t know why she was walking, and she couldn’t seem to make it stop. She was vaguely aware of her name being called, but she couldn’t turn towards whomever it was calling her. She couldn’t answer either.
She was on a mission. She had to kill. Her feet moved for her, taking her in the direction of people. People that she had to kill. Humans. Any human that crossed her path.
There. Her first target. A loner. It was stupid to walk alone at night in Sunnydale. People still did it though. It made them easy targets.
It was simple. Too simple. She walked up to the girl and snapped her neck. She knew she shouldn’t have done that. She’s not even sure why she did. It needed to be done. But she wasn’t finished. She had to find more humans.
She continued walking towards more populated areas when suddenly, the world went dark.
*************
She awoke with a start, sitting up fast, and would have been out of the bed if someone hadn’t pushed her back down.
“Easy, love.”
Spike. She relaxed, lying back down.
“What happened?”
“It was a demon. When you attacked it, it managed to get you under some sort of mind control. It wanted you to do its dirty work for it. When I killed it, you were out from under its control. I was too late though. I’m sorry for that.”
Too late. She had killed another human. She had taken a human life. It was her fault. She should have fought the mind control harder. She should have been able to fight it off. She was the slayer. If she couldn’t fight off something like that, then what was the point?
“Hey, stop beating yourself up over this. There was nothing you could have done.”
“No. I should have fought the mind control harder.”
“There’s nothing you could have done. You’re just going to have to deal with it. If anything, it was my fault. I should have killed it sooner.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. It’s not your fault. Who knows how many people I would have killed if you hadn’t killed that demon.”
Spike crawled into bed next to her, and held her in his arms. She supposed what he was saying was true. She didn’t like it. She still thought that she should have been able to do something about it, but the fact of the matter was, it wasn’t her that killed that human. It was just something she was going to have to learn how to live with.
“Do the others know?”
“No.”
“Good. They don’t need to know.”
“You’ll be fine, Buffy. I’ll be here to help.”
Buffy settled back against Spike and let herself relax. She would deal just like she always did. For now, she would just let Spike hold her and comfort her and help her get through the night. She would deal with tomorrow when it came.
