“I’d like to know what it is that makes you think this is actually a good idea?”
“This is the best way to catch our guy and you know it.”
“What I know is that you’re insane.”
“Danny, this place is kind of particular, so unless you have a better idea…”
“Don’t worry guys. There’s no way anyone would suspect you weren’t a couple.”
Steve laughed as Danny turned to glare at Kono. One more glance at Steve and Danny was out the door.
“You’re going to have your hands full with that one tonight, Boss.”
“That just makes my life more interesting.” He grinned at Kono and left so that he could get ready for his and Danny’s adventure for the night.
*****
Getting ready had been easy. The club wasn’t fancy, but you couldn’t walk in looking like you had just come off the street.
They didn’t just let anyone in. You had to look good, and you had to look good together.
That was the other part. This wasn’t a club where you went to pick someone up. It was couples only. Why a place like this actually existed was beyond him.
He parked outside of Danny’s hovel and honked, knowing it would piss him off. He wondered if Danny would be in his usual attire, or if he would actually change up his outfit for the night.
He watched Danny walk towards him, cell phone to his ear, probably saying good night to his daughter. His jaw dropped when he saw what Danny was wearing.
He’s traded in his usual slacks, nice shirt, and tie for a pair of very well fitted jeans and a t-shirt that showed off his muscles. Steve swallowed hard. Danny looked damned good. He honestly hadn’t thought Danny had anything else in his wardrobe.
Danny hung up his phone and got in the car.
“You know,” he started before he’d even slid all the way into his seat, “if we’re supposed to be pretending that this is a real date, and you’re the one picking me up, shouldn’t you have at least walked to my door and knocked? Maybe I would have even forgiven you for not bringing me flowers.”
“How insensitive of me. I’m so sorry I forgot the flowers.”
“What a lousy first date you’re turning out to be.”
“Well, how about I buy you a drink when we get there to make up for the lack of flowers. Does that sound okay, Princess?”
“What, so you can get me drunk and take advantage of me? I don’t think so, Cupcake.”
They kept up the easy and familiar banter the rest of the way to the club. Steve was glad for it because it meant he didn’t have to think of anything else to say.
He was completely thrown by the fact that he just wanted to stare at Danny, and possibly jump him. He knew they bickered like an old married couple, but he hadn’t really thought about it. Until now.
Could Danny have feelings for him? Maybe that was why he was so opposed to this idea instead of the usual being opposed to an idea just because it was Steve’s idea. He had seemed more upset than usual.
And what about him? Was there something there that he had been ignoring?
Before he could delve too deeply into that, they were at the club. He parked the car and they went to stand in a thankfully short line.
Steve looked up the line to see that all of the other couples were holding hands or had their arms around each other or were kissing.
“Well, I’m not kissing you,” he heard Danny say from beside him. He turned to see that Danny had been eyeing the line the same way he had been doing. This might wind up being a bit more difficult than he had anticipated.
“Okay, let’s just…” He threw his arm around Danny’s shoulders. He could manage this. He felt Danny wrap his arm around his lower back.
It was…not uncomfortable. They were both a bit tense because of the situation, but he was finding that he didn’t really mind having this much contact with Danny.
They got into the club easily and the first thing they did was head to the bar, where Steve bought them both drinks like he had joked about in the car. They stood there leaning against the bar, scoping out the crowd to try and find the guy they were looking for.
They were standing side by side, touching so they could keep up appearances, but it was all a bit awkward. The easy camaraderie from in the car was gone. Steve knew that part of it was from his sudden questions about their relationship and also from the comfortable feeling of having his arm around Danny earlier.
He noticed Danny tapping his foot and bopping his head to the beat, and it made him smile. The next thing out of his mouth he blamed on the alcohol even though he’d only had a few sips.
“Wanna dance?” He turned his head away and silently cursed himself. He felt a punch on his arm.
“Aw Cupcake. You really know the way to a man’s heart.”
Steve snorted and turned back to Danny. “Princess, if I was looking for a way into your heart then I could just spend even more time with Grace.”
Danny chuckled. “You got me there.”
And just like that, things were okay between them again, maybe even better. Danny tilted his head towards the dance floor, a questioning look on his face. He clapped a hand down on Danny’s shoulder, smiling.
“Sure Danno. Why not?”
They joined the crowd on the dance floor. They started out dancing with space between them, but they inched their way closer together as they continued dancing.
“Any sign of our guy, Steve?”
Steve froze on the dance floor. “Shit.” He’d completely forgotten they were here to work. He wasn’t a blusher, but he could feel his cheeks growing hotter.
Danny laughed and pulled him down for a kiss. Steve let out a startled gasp, which Danny used to his advantage, letting his tongue slip into Steve’s mouth. He was pretty sure that he was the one that moaned into the kiss, but at this point, he really didn’t care.
He pulled Danny in closer and gave himself over to a kiss that somehow felt like it had been a long time coming.
“Okay, Danno,” he said, resting his forehead against Danny’s. “What do you say we forget about the case for tonight?”
“Or we could be really dirty and get off in the bathroom, come back out here to see if we can find our guy, and then take this back to my place.”
“Wrong, Danno,” he laughed, dragging Danny off to the restroom. “We’ll be taking this back to my place, not yours.”
He heard Danny laugh next to him. This idea of his had definitely been one of his better ones.
