“This is the last of it. Are you sure you don’t want me to stick around and help you unpack?”

Jeremy let out a groan.

“Okay, okay.” Elena held up her hands in surrender. “I’ll leave you alone now.”

Elena didn’t move though.

“Elena, I’m going to be fine. And you’re not that far away if I need you.”

Elena sighed and nodded. “I know. Now just give me a hug and I’ll be out of your hair.” She held out her arms for him. Jeremy smiled and hugged her tight. He knew that she just wanted to keep him safe.

“Call me if you have any problems.”

“I will.”

“Be good.”

“Maybe.”

Elena snorted and finally let Jeremy out of the hug. She took her leave, leaving Jeremy alone in his new dorm room. Jeremy looked around his room with a smile. It wasn’t much, but it would be his first time out from under his sister’s thumb. He was going to have to get by on his own. He looked forward to it.

He was nearly done setting up his room when the door opened. Jeremy found himself looking into the most brilliant blue eyes he had ever seen. The rest of the guy wasn’t bad either; dark hair, pale skin, muscular but not overly so. If this was Jeremy’s roommate he was so screwed.

“Hi. I’m Jeremy.” Jeremy sighed in relief, mentally of course, when he managed to get that sentence out without his voice cracking or something equally embarrassing.

“Damon,” the guy said. That was all he offered though before turning his attention to his side of the room.

“I hope you don’t mind that I already claimed this side of the room. We can always trade if you want.”

“This is fine.”

Jeremy opened his mouth to say something else, but thought better of it. If Damon didn’t want to talk then Jeremy wasn’t going to force him to. They had time to get to know each other. It didn’t have to been done right this second. Maybe Damon had travelled for a while and was tired and just wanted to get settled in. Jeremy didn’t know. He would leave him alone for now. He could give him a few days to adjust before pestering him with questions again.

Jeremy took the time to just watch Damon instead. He really was gorgeous. He wondered which way Damon swung, or if maybe he enjoyed the company of both sexes. Jeremy had always preferred men. He hoped that Damon was similarly inclined.

*****

Damon turned out to be a pretty decent roommate. He never took any of Jeremy’s stuff without permission, he was quiet, and he never sexiled Jeremy. Actually, when he thought about it, Damon was the perfect roommate.

Damon even managed to stay quiet despite the odd hours that he kept. He was always leaving late at night and getting back in the early hours of the morning. He would sleep for a bit, go to class, do some homework, take a nap, and then leave for the night again.

Jeremy had once tried to ask Damon what it was he was doing, but Damon had told him that it was none of his business and Jeremy hadn’t bothered asking again.

Jeremy still didn’t know much about Damon, and every time he learned some new little fact it just made him hungrier to learn more. Damon had become a bit of an obsession. A gorgeous obsession who probably didn’t even really know that Jeremy existed. Jeremy was okay with that. Even if Damon knew he existed, he didn’t know if Damon was interested in men or not. He had yet to find that out. Jeremy didn’t even know if Damon was interested in human interaction at all, considering how little they actually communicated.

Jeremy was out with a couple of guys he had met in class. They were at a gay bar and Jeremy was working hard to forget that he had a gorgeous and untouchable roommate. It wasn’t working well though so he overcompensated with his drinking. He didn’t think it would be the worst thing in the world if he drank himself into oblivion.

He spent the night laughing and drinking until one of the guys in the group decided it was time for them to call it quits. Jeremy thought that maybe that was a good idea since as soon as he stood up he had to cling to the stool to keep himself from meeting the floor. He did notice that the guys were a lot less drunk than he was. They had to help him out of the bar.

Jeremy was too drunk to notice when they walked him into the alley, but he wasn’t too drunk to notice when they starting punching him and kicking him. He tried to swing but he didn’t hit anything. He was too drunk to hit a stationary wall. He fell to the ground and curled up as best as he could. The only thing he could hope for now was to protect himself and hopefully then the injuries wouldn’t be too severe.

There was so much pain. Even with the effects of the alcohol he was in a lot of pain. It would be worse once he sobered up. He was surprised he could still form coherent thoughts. He didn’t know why this was happening. He thought these guys were his friends. He thought these guys were people he could hang out with and be himself around.

There was a shout and the punching and the kicking finally stopped. He heard sounds around him but he had no idea what was going on. Then there was quiet and he was being lifted like he weighed nothing at all. Jeremy caught sight of piercing blue eyes before his world went dark.

*****

Everything ached. His head was pounding and his throat was dry. He didn’t think he could move. It felt like he would never move again.

He took his time taking in his surroundings before even opening his eyes. It was quiet and it was warm. Not too warm though. He was comfortable. As comfortable as he could be anyway with all the pain. He was also aware that he was lying on something soft rather than the concrete he knew he had been on before. He was definitely in a bed. He just didn’t know where yet.

Jeremy forced himself to open his eyes. He was back in his room. Of course. He had seen Damon’s eyes just before he had passed out. Why hadn’t Damon taken him to the hospital? Jeremy was sure that’s where he needed to be.

Jeremy tried to turn his head and groaned with the effort. That definitely wasn’t happening. He closed his eyes at the sudden wave of nausea. When he opened them again Damon was looming over him.

“You saved me,” Jeremy croaked. Damon held up a cup of water with a straw to his lips. Jeremy took a few sips and tried to talk again. “Why am I not in the hospital?”

Damon set the cup back down from wherever he had gotten it but he didn’t say anything to Jeremy. Jeremy took in Damon’s disheveled appearance and realized something.

“You’re wearing scrubs. You’re a nurse, aren’t you.” Jeremy would have guessed doctor first, but that wouldn’t have explained all the secrecy about what Damon had been doing at nights. For some reason he was ashamed that he was a nurse. “Nothing to be ashamed about, you know.”

“Fine. I’m a nurse. I’m not ashamed of it. I just know there are people at this school who wouldn’t take too kindly to finding out what I do with my life. I believe you were out with some of them tonight.”

“They’re the ones who suggested the gay bar,” Jeremy claimed in attempt to defend his decision to go.

Damon sat down on the bed. “I’m not trying to pin the blame on you. You couldn’t have known that was going to happen. You couldn’t have known what they really had planned.”

“Thanks for saving me.”

Damon smirked at him. “Just means you owe me for the rest of the semester, kid.”

Jeremy opened his mouth to yell at Damon for even thinking something like that, but he closed it when he saw that Damon’s smirk had turned into a smile. Jeremy smiled back even though it hurt him to do so.

“Are you sure I don’t need to be in a hospital?”

Damon nodded. “I got to you in time and they were kind of drunk anyway. Things could have been a lot worse. Not to say that you won’t be feeling it for a while. You’ve got a few nasty cuts and bruises.”

“More than a few. My whole body feels like a bruise.”

Damon snorted and took Jeremy’s hand in his own. “You’re not entirely wrong.”

Months of hardly any interaction at all and now Damon was holding his hand. “So does this means we’re friends now?”

The corners of Damon’s lips curled upwards, his blue eyes full of laughter. “Something like that.”

Jeremy licked his lips and swallowed hard. It seemed that Jeremy’s luck had just taken a turn for the better.
