Leonard could smell the rain in the air. It wasn’t here yet, but it wouldn’t be much longer. He had always been able to smell the rain before it arrived, ever since he was a little kid. It was one of his favorite scents.

Hell, Leonard loved water, period. He loved everything about it. He loved the way it smelled, the way the waves sounded crashing into the shore, the steady sound of waterfalls, the ever present breeze around larger bodies of water, and most of all, he loved the way the water soothed him.

On Leonard’s most stressful days, he could sit out near a lake or by the ocean and feel the stress just melt away. This was why, when he and Jim were planning their trip, he insisted that this time they spend it by water. It had been a long semester and Leonard could use that kind of relaxation.

They always took their trips together. Leonard had been stuck with - okay, in love with and unwilling to part with - Jim since the day he had threatened to throw up on the kid. This time, Jim had wanted to go somewhere in the south. Leonard hadn’t really wanted to do that since this was the trip they were taking for the two weeks before summer classes started. He had, however, relented, since Jim agreed to find a place near some water.

This was how Leonard found himself in a rental house off of Lake Travis in Austin, Texas. Texas. Leonard wasn’t sure what possessed Jim to pick Texas, but even he had to admit - there were some damn fine cowboys if you looked in the right places. Not that Leonard was looking. He should be though, since Jim had no idea that his best friend was in love with him.

It was only their second day in Austin, and Leonard was spending the morning lounging on the patio in his swimming trunks overlooking the lake, with an iced tea the only thing keeping him cool. Not that the iced tea was helping. It was ridiculously hot. Leonard had never experienced this kind of hot before. The soaring temperatures mixed with the soaring humidity made for the worst kind of day imaginable.

Jim was still in bed, probably having spent most of his night with some woman, or man, that he had just met. They had gone to Sixth Street last night, but Leonard had left early, claiming exhaustion from the trip into Austin. Really, he just couldn’t stand to watch Jim flirt with everyone else, leaving Leonard every few minutes to hit on someone else.

Speak of the devil. “’Bout time you rolled out of bed Jim. Late night?”

“Bones, it’s vacation. If I want to spend my morning lounging in bed, then why shouldn’t I?”

Leonard chuckled. “You gonna stay out here and watch the storm roll in with me?”

Jim smiled brightly at him. “Oh yeah Bones.” He sat down on the chair next to Leonard and swiped his iced tea.

“Damn it Jim,” Leonard growled. “Get your own tea.”

“But Bones, it’s so hot out here. How the hell did you ever survive Georgia?”

“It was never this hot. Now shut up and enjoy the view and give me my tea back.”

Amazingly enough, Jim did exactly what he said without complaint. So they sat and enjoyed the peacefulness of the lake, that wonderful quietness that was only broken by the sounds of the boats on the lake. After about half an hour of that peacefulness, the thunder started.

Leonard breathed in deeply and sighed. It had been a long time since he had witnessed a good thunderstorm, and Leonard was looking forward to it. He was amazed that Jim had been able to keep quiet for so long.

“You awake over there kid?”

Jim chuckled. “Yeah Bones. You were right about the water. This is the most relaxed I’ve ever felt before.”

Leonard smiled and went back to enjoying the silence, the thunder, and the breeze. They watched as the boaters made their way back to the docks in preparation for the incoming storm. They watched as the storm clouds rolled in and the lightning finally started.

The bright white bolts striking down from a darkened sky, the bright flashes that never made it to the ground, striking between clouds and illuminating them. Mother Nature was putting on a show. Then the rain started; slowly at first, building until it was a torrential downpour.

They only got to enjoy a few more minutes of the storm when suddenly the sky was filled with brightness followed by a deafening thunderclap that sounded like an explosion, rattling all of the windows. Something nearby had been struck, which probably meant that they had just lost power.

Leonard made his way into the house to check. Sure enough, the power was gone. He was about to make his way through the kitchen, where he knew there were some flashlights in a cabinet, when he felt a hand on his shoulder.

He felt warm breath on his neck and a whisper in his ears. “Bones.”

Leonard felt his mouth go dry. He turned to face Jim, and was about to open his mouth to say something, when he felt Jim’s lips press against his. He couldn’t handle this. This was Jim pressed up against him, something he’d been wanting for so long, but not like this, not as a fling. He shoved Jim away.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing Jim? I’m not going to be some two week fling.”

Jim didn’t respond right away. When he did, Leonard had to strain to hear him above the pounding of the rain.

“How could you think that Bones? You know you mean more to me than that. I could never do that to you.”

Damn it if the kid didn’t sound hurt, and maybe even a little heartbroken. Leonard was kind of glad that he couldn’t see Jim’s face well enough to see his expression. Had Jim really had feelings for him this whole time? Had Leonard missed something? Sure, Jim flirted with him, but Jim flirted with everyone.

Jim started to walk away, but before he could, before Leonard could over-think, he grabbed Jim and pulled him in for a searing kiss. They fumbled their way to the bedroom, pulling off the few articles of clothing they had on. They spent the rest of the night in the hot, humid room with the rain pounding against the windows.

When Leonard awoke in the morning, he was greeted by a bright and beautiful Jim, smiling down at him. Jim leaned down and kissed Leonard long and sweet. When they broke apart, Leonard smiled up at Jim.

“Jim, I think we should spend the rest of the two weeks inside this air conditioned house, rather than facing that Texas heat.”

Jim chuckled. “Think you can keep up old man?”

Leonard growled and shoved Jim down to the bed, and it was Jim who was the first to have to give in, admitting that it was he, not Leonard, who couldn’t keep up.
