Rachel and Stan had come back quickly after they had heard about the tsunami warning, even though Danny had told Rachel it was a false warning. For once though, he was glad to not have Grace around. He needed to have this out with Steve, and he needed to do it now.
He pulled up to Steve’s house and there was already another car there. Danny had a pretty good idea who that was. Well, she was just going to have to leave. He walked into Steve’s house just like he always did, and not caring that Steve had company.
“What the hell, Danny? You really need to learn how to knock.”
He was leaning against the kitchen counter, his arms around Catherine. He pointed at her. “You, out,” he said, jerking his thumb towards the door. “Now.”
“Excuse me? Who the hell do you think you are barging in here and telling me to leave?”
“And where is Grace?”
Danny turned to Steve. “Rachel and Stan came back early when they heard about the tsunami warning. They did offer to let me keep her…” He let that trail off, hoping Steve would understand the importance of that. Thankfully, Steve was no idiot. Well, he was, but that wasn’t what he meant.
“Catherine, you should go now. I’ll call you later.”
“Wait, are you kidding me?”
“I’m sorry. You need to go.”
Danny wanted to smirk as Catherine huffed out of the house, but he managed to keep his face neutral, but just barely. The front door slammed shut and it was just him and Steve standing there, Steve fuming, but that was okay because Danny was too.
“You want to tell me what this is about, Danny?”
“It’s about you, Steve. It’s always about you.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“I have a question for you, Steven. Did you even care that for the first time since we’ve been partners, I was actually terrified? Did it bother you at all?”
“Of course it did, Danny.”
“Oh, really? Well, you showed it well.”
“Is this what I had to kick Catherine out for? Because you’re upset that I didn’t hold your hand?”
“Oh no. I was just warming up, because you, my friend, do not get it.”
“What don’t I get?”
“Have you ever noticed how we act around each other all of the time? Or how other people perceive us, and the jokes we hear because of it?”
“You mean all of the marriage jokes?”
“Yes, Steven. I mean all of the marriage jokes.”
“What about them? We’re comfortable around each other. People just think we’re closer than we are.”
“Did it ever occur to you that there’s a reason why they think that? No, you know what? Forget that for a moment. What about all of the times you give me crap about my clothes? Did you happen to notice that I wasn’t wearing a tie today, that I’m still not wearing a tie?”
“I did notice, actually.”
“And you didn’t say anything?”
“I didn’t know that I had to comment every time you didn’t wear a tie.”
The pain in his chest was growing, squeezing more tightly now. He was having trouble breathing.
“You listen to my rants. I think you even enjoy them.”
“They are definitely entertaining.”
“I call you babe. You call me baby. I call you Steven. You call me Danno.”
“What do our nicknames have to do with anything?”
“You had the governor interfere so that I could still see Gracie.”
“Of course I did. Rachel was being unreasonable, and you’re a good father.”
“We both drive my car. In fact, you drive my car without me.”
“Still don’t see what you’re trying to get at here, and why you had to interrupt my date with Catherine.”
He was losing steam now. It seemed that Steve really didn’t get it.
“Have you noticed how I act when you’ve been with Catherine, when you mention Catherine? Or for that matter, when that one guy that was supposed to be your friend, Nick I think his name was, turned up? You actually called me on it that time. And then there was that case when you had to be Aquaman and I got left behind and I asked you if you missed me?”
Steve sighed. “Danno, your point?”
“Wow, you really don’t get it. Jesus Christ, Steven! I am in love with you. And I honestly thought that maybe you felt the same way about me, that maybe we were heading in the same direction.”
Steve was just standing there, staring at Danny, and Danny could feel his heart breaking, as ridiculous as that sounded. It had never been like this with Rachel. He was so far gone when it came to Steve, and he just couldn’t keep doing this.
“I want to transfer back to HPD.”
Steve still didn’t say anything, but his eyes widened.
“Have you ever been so in love with someone that it hurts? That it actually physically hurts?”
Steve was still staring at him, hadn’t moved at all. He was kind of like a deer caught in headlights.
All of the anger and frustration he had felt when he had first gotten here was completely drained. He felt empty and broken.
“I’m serious about HPD, Steve. I can’t do this. I’m sorry. I thought maybe the way you acted today was just a fluke, that you did actually have feelings for me. I guess you were just being a really good friend.”
He turned his back on Steve and headed for the front door. He wished that Steve would at least say something instead of just standing there. He walked out the door, got in his car, and drove away, all without Steve coming out to stop him, to say something to him.
He thought briefly about stopping at a bar, but he decided he would rather crawl into bed and never move again.
He had just finished changing into boxers and a t-shirt when there was a knock at this door. He opened it to find Steve standing there. They stood there staring at each other for a couple of minutes, and when Danny was finally about to say something, Steve kissed him.
It wasn’t rough and demanding, the way he had always imagined their first kiss would be. Instead, it was gentle and sweet. It was just a little less than chaste, Steve’s tongue barely touching his before he pulled back. The kiss didn’t last long, but Danny was breathless, and angry again, when they parted.
“What the hell was that, McGarrett?”
He could see the sarcastic remark forming, so he crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. Steve sighed and ran a hand though his hair.
“I didn’t know, Danno. It didn’t hit me until you said you wanted to transfer back to HPD. I thought about what it would be like without you there all of the time. I would miss your rants, your hatred of all things Hawaii, your damn ties, your love for Grace, and so many other things, but mostly, I would just miss you. I called Catherine on the way over here and told her that things were over between us. I hope I didn’t screw this up. Please tell me I didn’t screw this up.”
This time, Danny pulled Steve down for a kiss. It was deeper and more intimate, and it made his toes curl. Which also reminded him that he was in just a t-shirt and boxers. He pulled out of the kiss and looked down at himself.
“Um, maybe you should come in.”
Steve chuckled and walked in, shutting the door behind him. Danny sat on his bed, but Steve pushed him down, pushing him up the bed, and then followed him down. Steve rolled them to their sides and tried to kiss Danny again, but Danny pushed him away.
“Please tell me that this isn’t your fucked up way of getting me to stay on with Five-0”
“Danny, I wouldn’t do that, you know I wouldn’t do that. If this was just about you staying with Five-0 then I would have found another way. I know I screwed this up and I know you’re having a hard time believing me, but you have to trust me when I say that I want this.”
This time when Steve leaned in to kiss him, he let him. They wrapped their arms around each other, closing the gap between them. That was when Steve broke the kiss, looking nervous, which was something that Danny had never seen on him before.
“Listen, Danny, I’ve uh, I’ve never been with a guy before.”
Danny snorted. “Me neither.”
Steve smiled at him. “You know something, Danny?”
“No, what?”
“You have got to be the only person who would rant at someone to tell them you loved them.”
“I don’t rant at just anyone, babe.”
Steve huffed out a laugh. “No. I hope not.” He captured Danny’s lips in a kiss again.
It was nice to know that Steve actually did listen to all of his ranting. He was definitely going to have to remember that.
