Another shot of tequila down the hatch. She’d lost count a couple of shots back, which probably meant that she should stop, but she didn’t, and probably wouldn’t for a while.

She had been a hell of a lot more afraid than she had let on, and even with all of the alcohol in her system, her nerves still hadn’t calmed down.

Chin was sitting next to her. He had stopped taking shots and was just staring off into space. Whatever she was feeling was nothing compared to what he must be going through. A fucking bomb had been strapped around his neck.

They had become so close since Chin had gotten her a place with Five-0, and she had almost lost him because of some asshole that had beef with McGarrett. It made her realize what she had been trying to deny for so long now. Her feelings for Chin were deeper than familial.

She took another shot of tequila. Maybe she was trying to drown her feelings in alcohol. If only she could.

She placed a hand on Chin’s back. “How you holding up, cuz?”

Chin shook his head. “I’m relieved and grateful, but all I can think about is what if McGarrett hadn’t come through.”

“Hey!” She punched him in the arm, aim still good and punch still hard despite all of the alcohol in her system. “I helped, you know.”

Chin huffed out a laugh. “I know.”

She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tight. “I’m so happy that you’re still here with me.”

She felt Chin wrap his arms around her, hugging her back. She rested her head on his shoulder and sighed, content to stay right where she was.

After what seemed like only a couple of seconds, though it had probably been a couple of minutes, Chin started to pull out of the hug. She held on tight, not willing to let go just yet.

“Kono?”

“Don’t leave. Not yet.”

“Okay cuz, I think you’ve had enough to drink. Time to get you to bed.” He helped her off of the floor where they had been sitting. She purposely let most of her weight lean against Chin. She was feeling a lot drunker now that she was standing anyway.

He helped her into the bedroom and into bed. When he started to walk away, her hand shot out, closing over his wrist.

“Stay.”

“What?”

“Don’t go. I have something important to tell you.”

Chin sat down on the bed next to her.

“Please don’t run when I tell you.”

“Kono, nothing you could say could make me run.”

Kono giggled. “That’s because you haven’t heard what I have to say.”

He sat there patiently, waiting for her to tell him what was so important. The alcohol was making her brave. Or stupid. Probably just both.

“I love you, and not like a cousin should. I’m in love with you. I just wanted to tell you that because of what happened today. I can’t lose you.”

Chin just looked at her for a couple of minutes, not saying anything, expression entirely unreadable.

“Go to sleep, cuz. We’ll talk in the morning.”

Chin got up and left her there, wondering if she had made a huge mistake.

**********

Morning came with too bright a sun. Chin was standing next to her bed, looking down at her and smirking.

“Morning, cuz. How’s that bottle of tequila you had doing this morning?”

“Shut up. Wasn’t a whole bottle.”

She tried to move, but that was something her stomach was definitely against, and she had to get up and run for the toilet. She could hear Chin laughing behind her.

“So glad you find this funny,” she said when she was finally able to talk.

“That’s what you get for drinking all of those shots.”

Kono groaned, but thankfully her stomach seemed to be done emptying itself.

“Do you remember anything from last night?”

Kono couldn’t think much beyond the pounding headache, but then flashes of what she had said last night had her groaning.

“Oh no.”

“Kono,” Chin was kneeling down next to her now. “Did you mean it?”

It would be so easy to lie and then they could both pretend that nothing had happened. She was tired of hiding though.

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

He got up and left, and Kono had no idea what to make of that. She managed to pull herself off of the floor and brushed her teeth for entirely too long, until her mouth finally felt minty fresh. She splashed her face with cold water and headed back out to the bedroom feeling slightly more human. Chin was standing there waiting for her.

“I’m glad you said something because I don’t think I was ever going to be able to.”

“Wait, what?”

“I’m in love with you too, cuz.”

He walked over to her, grabbed her face in his hands, and leaned in to kiss her. It was short and sweet, but it still made her a little weak in the knees.

“Come on. Let’s see if we can find you something to eat.”

She followed him out to the kitchen, smiling, and wondering how the worst day of her life had also turned out to be the best.
