A/N: Christmas present for [livejournal.com profile] jazzrose343

A blast of icy cold air nearly took the breath from him as he opened the motel room. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and made his way to the Impala.

He crawled into the back seat and just sat. Well, first he banged his head against the window a few times. Then he just sat.

He was reaching a breaking point. He couldn’t stand much more of being around an empty Sam. This was worse than when Sam had been drinking demon blood. At least then he had still cared if his older brother was in trouble. At least he had still wanted to help people, even if it was in his own twisted way.

All Sam cared about now was hunting. Except, Sam couldn’t actually care, so why was he even bothering? Dean’s head was starting to hurt. He really needed to stop thinking.

“Cas, I know you’re busy,” he sighed, “but I could really use a friend right now.”

“I could use one too.”

Dean didn’t bother turning to face the angel. He kept his head resting against the window, eyes closed.

“Things still going badly for you, Cas?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry. I wish I could help.”

“I know, Dean.”

They sat in silence for a while. Dean like the comfortable silences he had with Cas. It was so easy to be with him. The way it used to be easy to be with Sam.

“Cas, I don’t know how much longer I can deal with this.” He still hadn’t turned to face Cas yet. He felt too raw, too vulnerable. “He used to care about everything. He used to enjoy getting into prank wars with me. He used to annoy me in ways that a younger brother should. Now, he’s nothing.”

He could feel tears beginning to form and slowly make their way down his cheeks. He didn’t expect Cas to understand. Most human emotions were still beyond him.

He started when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He hadn’t even heard Cas move. He turned to face Cas for the first time since he had shown up.

“Dean, I may not understand, but I do know that I don’t like to see you in this much pain.”

He didn’t know what to say to that. It was more than he had expected.

“I understand that when one person is crying, then they are typically comforted by the touch of another.”

Dean snorted.

“Is that not correct?”

“No, it is. It’s just not usually between two guys.”

Cas began to pull his hand away, but Dean grabbed it and held it in place. Suddenly, he wanted nothing more than to just crawl into Cas’ lap, and why shouldn’t he? There was no one here to witness it, and Cas certainly wouldn’t think any less of him.

He gave into the contact that he craved. He moved Cas’ hand to his other shoulder so the angel’s arm was around him. He turned into Cas, wrapped an arm around him, and buried his face into Cas’ neck.

Cas lifted his other arm and wrapped it around Dean, tentatively, like he was afraid of hurting him.

“You can hug me a bit tighter than that, Cas.” He had only shed a few tears so far, but when Cas squeezed tighter, the tears fell freely. Cas didn’t say anything, he just held him as he cried, unmoving as only Cas can be, but a comfort just the same.

When the tears finally stopped flowing, he was unwilling to let go of Cas, years of repressed feelings pushed to the surface at the intimacy of the situation.

“Dean, does that make you feel better?”

“The crying?”

“Yes.”

“Yeah, it does.”

“I don’t understand.”

“It’s hard to explain, but it’s like a release.”

“And how do you feel now?”

“Calmer.” And it was true. He was relaxed here in the Impala with Cas. He kept his arm wrapped around Cas, but lifted his head up so he could look at him. Cas’ head was titled, probably trying to understand the concept of crying, but failing miserably.

Before Dean was even aware that he was doing it, he was kissing Cas. And Cas was kissing him back. He kept it brief, needing to make sure that Cas was okay with this, despite having kissed him back.

“That was much better than the one with Meg.”

If it had been anyone else, he probably would have punched them for that comment, but it was Cas, and he couldn’t help but laugh.

“That’s because you actually care about me.”

“I see,” Cas replied, though Dean was pretty sure that he really didn’t understand. Not yet. “Can we do that again?”

Dean was more than happy to oblige. He deepened the kiss this time, licking along the seam of Cas’ lips until they parted for him.

Cas was a quick learner, imitating Dean first, and then trying a few things of his own.

When they finally broke apart, Dean was breathing heavily, and Cas had a dazed look on his face. It was far from the best kiss of his life, except that it was the best because it was Cas.

That was probably the sappiest thought of his entire life, but it didn’t make it any less true.

“Cas, do you have to go soon?”

“I can stay for a while.”

“Can you stay for the night?”

Cas smiled at him, and Dean had never been happier that Cas had at least been able to pick that up.

“I can stay for the night.”

Dean settled himself back against Cas and let out a sigh. For now, he was happy.

“Thanks, Cas.”

“You’re welcome, Dean.”

He didn’t know where this would lead for him and Cas, but he knew that he wanted it, and could only hope that Cas wanted it too.

The arms that were wrapped around him tightened their grip. Dean allowed himself to take the comfort in the warmth of Cas and the weight of the arms wrapped around him.

He didn’t want to sleep. He wanted to enjoy this feeling for as long as he could, and Cas must have sensed that.

“Sleep, Dean,” he whispered into Dean’s ear, two fingers being pressed against his forehead. He sank into the blissful peacefulness of a dreamless sleep, a smile on his lips.
