“Merlin, it’s called knocking. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? One does it when they wish to enter a room someone is in with the door closed.”

“Sorry Arthur. Won’t happen again.” Except they both knew it would. Sometimes Merlin really did forget to knock, but most of the time he just did it to annoy Arthur. It wasn’t that he was a bad flatmate - he was actually a really good one - but Arthur was his best friend, and if he didn’t annoy him, then who would?

Today had been one of those times where he had barged into Arthur’s room on purpose, and now Merlin had even more reason to do it again. Arthur had hastily shoved something under his pillow and Merlin was pretty sure he had seen a bit of yarn. He wondered what Arthur was trying to hide.

“I’m off to the movies with Gwen and Morgana. Did you want to come?”

“No thanks. I’ve got some things I need to do around here.”

“Okay. See you later then.” Merlin walked out and closed the door behind him, already plotting at how to find out what Arthur was hiding.

**********

The plan had been simple, really. All he was going to do was barge into Arthur’s room again, but when he had gotten back to the flat, Arthur was watching television. Good thing Merlin always planned for complications. Since Arthur wasn’t in his room, he would just sneak into it. It was actually quite simpler than having to barge in on Arthur. With Arthur out of the room, he could look around until he had found the yarn.

He made small talk with Arthur but quickly made his excuses to get back to his bedroom. When he was sure Arthur was once again immersed in his program, Merlin made his way as quietly as possible to Arthur’s room.

Merlin thought he would have to search the room from top to bottom to find what he was looking for, but it was right there on the bed for anyone to see. It was a ball of yarn and knitting needles, and what looked to be the majority of a scarf.

“I’m not an idiot, you know.” Merlin jumped and whirled around. Arthur was standing in the doorway, leaning against it with his arms crossed.

“Jesus. Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

“Maybe.”

“What did you mean when you said you aren’t an idiot?” Arthur walked into the room, stopping just in front of Merlin.

“I know you, Merlin, and honestly, this was easier than having to clean up the mess you would make of my room trying to search for what I was hiding.”

Merlin opened his mouth to say something, but he couldn’t get anything out. He just stood there with his mouth hanging open. Arthur, it would seem, knew him too well. When he finally found his voice again, he had to ask: “Knitting?”

He mentally kicked himself for his sheer brilliance. It wasn’t the blush that stained Arthur’s cheeks a dark pink, but rather the look in his eyes. If Merlin had to guess, he would say it was a mixture of hurt and disappointment. He had to figure out a way to make this right and he had to do it fast.

“How long have you been knitting for?”

“Since I was young. I had a nanny who knitted and she taught me how.”

Merlin had to once again give himself a mental kick. Arthur’s father had been a busy man and hadn’t had much time for Arthur. His mother had died during childbirth. Arthur hated talking about his childhood, and Merlin really couldn’t blame him.

“Can I watch?” Arthur looked at him like he had just sprouted another head.

“You want to watch me knit?” The disbelief was apparent in his voice.

“I do. I’ve never seen anyone knit before. Can I?” Arthur didn’t answer him. Instead, he walked past Merlin and picked up his knitting and then walked out of the bedroom.

Merlin waited a minute before following Arthur out. He was already knitting and watching a movie that he knew Merlin didn’t like. Merlin didn’t care though. He hadn’t been lying when he said he wanted to watch Arthur knit, so he sat down next to him.

He was worried he might grow bored doing nothing but watching Arthur knit, but he should have known better. He never got bored watching Arthur do anything.

He was in love with his best friend. Had been for some time now. He had no idea if Arthur felt the same way; hell, he had no idea if Arthur even liked men.

He watched, transfixed, as Arthur finished the scarf. He was fast, the needles flashing before Merlin’s eyes. Arthur didn’t even focus completely on his work. When Merlin was able to pull his eyes away from Arthur’s hands, sometimes he would see Arthur looking at his work, but other times Arthur would be paying attention to the television, still knitting away.

He never once caught Arthur looking at him, and he wondered if Arthur was still mad at him. He hoped not. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with Arthur knitting. Quite the opposite, in fact.

It suited Arthur. It was beautiful to watch, and it was now one more reason, to add to his ever-growing list, why Merlin loved Arthur.

He was so wrapped up in watching Arthur work that he was surprised when the needles stopped moving and a completed scarf was held up in front of him. He lifted a hand to finger it.

“It’s beautiful, Arthur.”

“It’s yours.” Merlin’s hand froze on the scarf and he looked at Arthur.

“For me?” Arthur nodded.

“Your birthday is coming up. I thought you’d like it.”

Merlin didn’t think. He grabbed Arthur’s face in his hands and kissed him. He had a moment of panic when Arthur didn’t respond and started to pull away, but then there was a hand on the back of his neck, holding him in place, and Arthur was kissing him back.

Arthur broke away first.

“How long?”

“I don’t know. Years?”

“You mean we could have been doing this for years?” Merlin was already up and grabbing Arthur’s hand.

“Guess we’d better make up for lost time then.”
