It had been a long time since a fight had taken so much out of her. She was bloodied and battered and bruised. Bruised. She still couldn’t believe she had actually bruised, but nasty purple welts now covered her body. She looked like one giant bruise.

She hurt. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been in this much pain. It hurt to move, but she had to keep walking. She couldn’t finish patrol tonight. Well, actually, she probably could. She was sure that if she had to, she could still stake a vampire, but she shouldn’t. She really needed to let her body recover.

She had to get somewhere safe, so she started heading towards Spike’s. It was a slow process since it hurt so much to move her legs. This must be what if felt like for normal people when they got into serious fights.

She felt like she could sleep for days. Maybe she would. It would be nice to disappear from the world for a bit.

She gave up on trying to walk. She was tired and in pain. She sat down and leaned against a headstone. That hurt too, but she didn’t know what else she could do. Anything she did at this point hurt. She had so many bruises that anywhere she touched hurt, and they were sensitive too. All she had to do was run her fingers lightly over them, and she would be in pain.

Thankfully, even though she had managed to bruise, she healed fast. The bruises would be gone in no time, but until then, she just had to suffer.

Buffy was so lost in thought, that she almost didn’t smell the smoke. It was a welcome scent that made her feel safe and loved. She was glad that Spike had found her, because it meant that she didn’t have to figure out a way to make it to his place.

“You look like a walking bruise.”

“Feel like one too.”

“Did some big baddie get the best of you?”

“Nah, I won in the end. I always win in the end.”

Spike didn’t say anything to that; instead, he sat down next to her, smoked his cigarette, and enjoyed the silence with her. That was one of the things that Buffy liked about Spike. There was never a need for long conversation. They could sit together in silence and be happy with that. It was easier than trying to pretend she was cheerful when she wasn’t.

A noise from a few graves over caught her attention. It was a freshly dug grave, and it looked like another vampire was trying to make its way into the world. She watched as Spike stood up and made his way over to the grave. He stood there, waiting for the vampire to make it through the earth.

Well, that was different. Not the vampire rising from the ground part. That was an almost daily occurrence in Sunnydale. No, what was unusual was that Buffy wasn’t the one that was going to kill it. It was usually Buffy standing at a grave, waiting for the dead to rise.

The pain that she had been feeling just moments ago was suddenly washed away by a warmth that enveloped her entire being. She had been fighting side by side with Spike for a while, and they had also been sleeping together for a while, but now, now he was taking care of her.

Spike knew that she could take care of herself, he knew that she could stake that vampire if it were necessary, but he was giving her time to recover. He was looking out for her.

Buffy smiled, and settled into a more comfortable position. As soon as she was healed, she would show Spike just how much she appreciated him.
